Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Develop and create comprehensive technical packages (tech packs) for all knitwear styles, including detailed construction information, garment measurements, grade rules, and finishing techniques.
Lead and manage all fit sessions on live models, forms, or avatars, providing clear and constructive feedback to vendors on fit, balance, and overall execution of the garment.
Analyze and approve knit-down swatches, strike-offs, and prototypes for yarn quality, color accuracy, tension, stitch structure, and hand-feel against brand standards.
Communicate daily with overseas and domestic factories, vendors, and suppliers to resolve technical issues, clarify specifications, and monitor the product development timeline.
Engineer garments from a technical perspective to meet target cost parameters without compromising the design integrity, quality, or brand aesthetic.
Establish and maintain stringent quality and construction standards for all knitwear categories, ensuring consistency across the entire product line.
Create and manage detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) within a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, ensuring all components are accurately captured.
Develop and implement standardized block patterns and grade rules for core knitwear bodies to streamline development and ensure consistent fit season over season.
Evaluate and provide risk assessments on new designs, identifying potential production, quality, or cost challenges early in the development cycle.
Manage the approval process for all samples in the development lifecycle, including proto, fit, size set, pre-production (PP), and top of production (TOP) samples.
Collaborate closely with the Design team to understand their creative intent and provide technical guidance on the feasibility of new knit structures, yarns, and silhouettes.
Drive research and development of new and innovative knitting techniques, yarn applications, and garment finishes to support design innovation.
Maintain a highly organized system for tracking sample status, fit comments, and approvals to ensure deadlines are met and all stakeholders are informed.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex production and quality control issues that arise during the manufacturing process, proposing effective and timely solutions.
Conduct competitor analysis and market research on knitwear fit, construction, and quality to inform and elevate the brand's product standards.

Secondary Functions

Support the yarn development and sourcing team by providing technical feedback on yarn performance, suitability, and potential production challenges.
Mentor and train junior technical designers or assistants, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable team environment.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes, tools, and systems, including the optimization of PLM workflows and tech pack templates.
Partner with the Quality Assurance team to establish inspection protocols and AQL standards specific to knitwear products.
Create and maintain a physical and digital library of approved knit-down swatches, yarns, and core garment blocks for future reference.
Participate in key cross-functional meetings to represent the technical knitwear perspective and ensure alignment between design, merchandising, and production.
Prepare and maintain detailed reports on sample approval rates, factory performance, and quality metrics to inform strategic decision-making.
Travel to factories and mills (domestically or internationally) to oversee production, train partners on new techniques, and conduct on-site quality audits.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Knitwear Construction Expertise: Deep, hands-on knowledge of various knitting methods including full-fashion, cut-and-sew, circular, and seamless/whole-garment knitting.
Yarn Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of different fiber types, yarn spinning systems, gauges, and their impact on garment drape, performance, and care.
Patternmaking & Grading: Proficiency in creating and correcting patterns for knitwear, as well as developing logical grade rules that maintain fit integrity across a full-size range.
PLM & Tech Pack Software: Advanced skills in using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g., Centric, FlexPLM) and proficiency in Adobe Illustrator for creating detailed technical sketches.
Fitting & Garment Evaluation: A trained eye for assessing garment fit, balance, and proportion on a body, and the ability to articulate corrections clearly.
Knitting Machine Knowledge: Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of industrial knitting machines (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki) is highly advantageous.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Textile Science or Textile Engineering
Fashion Design with a specialization in Knitwear

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10+ years of progressive experience in a knitwear-focused technical design or product development role.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience working directly with a diverse portfolio of knitwear, including sweaters, dresses, and fine-gauge knits. Hands-on experience with both domestic and overseas factory communication is strongly preferred.
