Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up and operate multi-gauge industrial knitting machines, such as Shima Seiki or Stoll, according to specific production schedules and technical specifications.
  • Interpret complex technical packets, pattern charts, and work orders to ensure accurate garment construction, stitch structure, and sizing.
  • Carefully select, mount, and thread cones of yarn through the machine's feeding systems, verifying color, type, and tension are correct for the job.
  • Perform initial test runs for new programs, meticulously inspecting the first-off articles for any discrepancies in quality, measurement, or design against the approved sample.
  • Continuously monitor machine operation to proactively identify potential issues like yarn breakages, needle defects, or pattern errors, making immediate adjustments to prevent waste.
  • Execute routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning machine beds, oiling moving parts, and replacing worn or broken needles and jacks to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common machine stoppages and error codes, applying a systematic approach to diagnose the root cause and implement effective solutions.
  • Conduct in-process quality control checks on knitted panels or garments, measuring dimensions and visually inspecting for defects like dropped stitches, holes, or uneven tension.
  • Accurately document production output, machine downtime, and material usage in production logs or digital manufacturing execution systems (MES).
  • Adjust machine settings, such as speed, tension, and takedown, to accommodate different yarn types, gauges, and complex knitting structures.
  • Carefully separate completed knitted panels from the machine and prepare them for the next stage of production, such as linking, sewing, or finishing.
  • Follow detailed garment specifications for specialized techniques, including intarsia, jacquard, and fully fashioned shaping, ensuring precise execution.
  • Manage the digital knitting programs on the machine's interface, loading the correct files for each production run and ensuring proper file management.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment around the knitting machinery, adhering to all company safety protocols and procedures.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate closely with knitting technicians and programmers to provide feedback on program efficiency and suggest modifications for improving quality and reducing run times.
  • Partner with the design and product development teams during the sampling phase, offering practical insights on the feasibility of new designs from a production standpoint.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of junior operators, sharing knowledge on machine operation, quality standards, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing production efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing overall product quality.
  • Work with the maintenance team to diagnose and report complex mechanical or electrical faults that require specialized technical intervention.
