Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and coordinate the full spectrum of daily operations within the knitting department, ensuring a seamless workflow from yarn preparation to finished panel production and meeting all output targets.
  • Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and ongoing training to a dedicated team of knitting machine operators and technicians, fostering a culture of accountability, skill development, and high performance.
  • Champion and enforce rigorous quality control protocols at every stage of production, conducting in-process inspections and approving first-article samples to guarantee all products meet or exceed brand standards.
  • Act as the primary technical troubleshooter for all knitting machinery (e.g., Stoll, Shima Seiki), diagnosing mechanical and programming issues to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Develop, manage, and optimize the master production schedule for the knitting floor, balancing machine capacity, operator availability, and material lead times to fulfill work orders on schedule.
  • Collaborate closely with the Design, Product Development, and Technical Design teams to review new styles for manufacturability, providing critical feedback on knit structures, yarn compatibility, and construction.
  • Skillfully interpret complex technical specification packets, CAD files, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) to ensure precise machine setup, programming, and accurate execution of design intent.
  • Oversee the preventative maintenance program for all department equipment, coordinating with maintenance staff to schedule service and ensure the long-term health and reliability of machinery.
  • Manage inventory levels for all essential knitting supplies, including a diverse range of yarns, machine needles, and spare parts, to prevent production stoppages.
  • Uphold and promote all company health and safety policies, conducting regular safety audits and training to ensure a secure and compliant working environment for all team members.
  • Generate, analyze, and present detailed production reports, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as output, efficiency rates, material waste, and machine downtime to identify trends and drive improvements.
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives, applying lean manufacturing principles to enhance productivity, streamline processes, and reduce operational costs.
  • Handle all aspects of team management, including performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, conflict resolution, and the recruitment and onboarding of new departmental staff.
  • Ensure effective communication and seamless handovers between shifts, maintaining detailed logs and holding shift-lead meetings to guarantee operational consistency.
  • Partner with the planning and merchandising departments to provide accurate capacity forecasting and labor planning, ensuring the department is resourced to meet future demand.
  • Take ownership of the sampling process for new knitwear products, managing the workflow to ensure prototypes are developed accurately and within established timelines.
  • Investigate, document, and resolve any production non-conformances or quality deviations, implementing corrective and preventative actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Stay abreast of new technology, machinery, and techniques within the knitwear industry, recommending investments and process changes to maintain a competitive edge.
  • Monitor and manage team member attendance, scheduling, and overtime to ensure proper staffing levels while controlling labor costs.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all key knitting processes, ensuring consistency and providing a clear reference for training and operations.

Secondary Functions

  • Support product development and R&D teams by running experimental knit trials and providing technical analysis on new yarn or structure combinations.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader production strategy and long-term capacity planning discussions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including the cutting, sewing, and finishing departments, to ensure a smooth end-to-end production flow.
  • Participate in production planning meetings and continuous improvement workshops to represent the knitting department's capabilities and challenges.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level Machine Knowledge: Deep, hands-on expertise in programming, operating, and troubleshooting industrial flat knitting machines, particularly Stoll and/or Shima Seiki models.
  • Yarn & Material Science: Comprehensive understanding of different yarn fibers, counts, gauges, and their properties and behavior during the knitting process.
  • Knit Structure Proficiency: Strong knowledge of various knit structures (jersey, rib, jacquard, intarsia, etc.) and the ability to deconstruct a fabric to determine its construction.
  • Technical Packet Interpretation: The ability to read, understand, and translate detailed technical design packets, CADs, and grade rules into machine-ready programs.
  • Production Planning Software: Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems or production scheduling software to manage workflows and track metrics.
  • Quality Control Methodologies: Skilled in visual and technical inspection of knitted fabrics, identifying defects, and applying quality assurance principles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

5-8 years of progressive experience within a knitwear manufacturing environment, including at least 2-3 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a high-volume, deadline-driven production facility.
  • A proven track record of improving departmental KPIs (e.g., efficiency, quality, on-time delivery).
  • Direct experience training operators on complex knitting machinery and programming.
