Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Assist senior technicians in the end-to-end development of knit garments, from initial concept and swatch development through to pre-production sample approval.
Learn to create, update, and meticulously maintain technical packages (tech packs), including detailed garment specifications, construction details, and bills of materials (BOMs).
Gain hands-on experience operating and programming industrial knitting machines (such as Shima Seiki or Stoll) to develop knit structures and initial prototypes.
Collaborate closely with the design team to understand their creative vision and provide technical feedback on the feasibility of proposed knit concepts.
Prepare and dispatch detailed technical packages and yarn specifications to overseas vendors and factories, ensuring all information is clear and accurate.
Receive, review, and measure incoming knit samples (proto, fit, and pre-production samples) against technical specifications, recording any deviations.
Participate actively in fit sessions with technical designers and designers, taking detailed notes, and helping to identify and solve fit and construction issues.
Support the management and organization of the yarn library, including tracking inventory, preparing yarn cards, and researching new material options.
Develop a deep understanding of different yarn types, gauges, and their properties to make informed recommendations for specific garment end-uses.
Learn to create and modify knit programs using specialized software (e.g., APEX, M1+) to achieve desired patterns, textures, and shaping.
Troubleshoot basic knitting and production issues as they arise, working with senior team members to find effective and timely solutions.
Maintain a comprehensive library of approved knit swatches, samples, and technical documentation for future reference and cross-functional use.
Communicate daily with factory partners and suppliers regarding sample status, technical questions, and production timelines under the supervision of a senior technician.
Create detailed flat sketches and technical illustrations using Adobe Illustrator to clearly communicate garment construction and design details.

Secondary Functions

Support the research and development of new and innovative knitting techniques, stitches, and finishing processes to drive product innovation.
Assist in conducting quality control inspections on incoming development samples to ensure they meet the brand's quality and construction standards.
Help prepare materials, swatches, and sample presentations for internal design reviews and milestone meetings.
Maintain the organization of the physical sample archive, ensuring all garments are properly labeled and stored.
Contribute to building and maintaining a digital library of knit structures and programming files for the team.
Assist in tracking the development calendar to ensure key deadlines for swatching, sampling, and approvals are being met.
Participate in competitor analysis by examining the construction, quality, and technical features of knitwear products in the market.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Knitwear Construction Knowledge: A foundational understanding of knit structures (jersey, rib, jacquard, intarsia), linking, and finishing techniques.
Adobe Creative Suite: Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator for creating technical flats and layouts, and a working knowledge of Photoshop.
MS Office Proficiency: Strong skills in Microsoft Excel for creating and managing spec sheets, BOMs, and tracking charts.
Garment Specifications: Ability to accurately measure garments and understand points of measure (POM).
Yarn Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of fiber types, yarn counts, and ply, and their impact on fabric and garment performance.
