Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively learn, practice, and demonstrate proficiency in tying a wide range of functional and industry-specific knots, hitches, and bends under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Assist senior riggers and technicians in the planning and execution of lifting, hoisting, and securing operations, ensuring all rope work is performed to specification.
  • Develop and perfect various rope splicing techniques, including eye splices, end-to-end splices, and lock-stitching on both traditional and modern high-modulus synthetic lines.
  • Conduct thorough, routine inspections of all ropes, lines, slings, and related hardware, identifying and documenting signs of wear, UV degradation, abrasion, or chemical damage.
  • Maintain meticulous logs of all equipment inspections, maintenance activities, and repairs, ensuring a clear and compliant history for all assets.
  • Learn to select the appropriate rope type (e.g., polyester, nylon, Dyneema), diameter, and knot or termination for specific applications based on load, environment, and operational requirements.
  • Participate directly in the safe attachment, manipulation, and securing of loads, ensuring proper balance, load angle, and tension are maintained throughout any procedure.
  • Study and apply foundational principles of physics related to rigging, including calculating safe working loads (SWL), understanding mechanical advantage, and determining fall factors.
  • Master the techniques of whipping and seizing rope ends to prevent fraying and ensure the longevity and safety of the lines.
  • Practice knot-tying and rigging tasks in challenging or simulated adverse conditions, such as while wearing gloves, in low-light environments, or at heights (with appropriate safety gear).
  • Assist in the fabrication, assembly, and repair of custom rope-based solutions, such as cargo nets, safety barriers, rope ladders, and specialized lifting tackle.
  • Learn to read, interpret, and execute tasks based on technical drawings, rigging plots, and lift plans.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the properties, strengths, and weaknesses of various natural and synthetic fiber ropes and their appropriate applications.
  • Shadow senior personnel to understand the client communication and project assessment process, learning how to translate operational needs into a rigging plan.
  • Become proficient in the use and maintenance of essential hand tools of the trade, including fids, marlinspikes, splicing needles, and tension meters.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to equipment usage, inspection frequency, and retirement schedules.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by accurately logging all work and providing feedback on data collection processes.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements, such as providing input for developing better equipment tracking software.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team, helping to refine requirements for internal tools and safety applications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop and storage area, ensuring all ropes and equipment are stowed correctly to prevent damage and ensure readiness.
  • Proactively participate in all daily safety briefings, "toolbox talks," and job hazard analysis meetings, contributing to a culture of safety.
  • Manage and maintain inventory levels for consumable ropework supplies, such as whipping twine, wax, and marking pens.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Rope Splicing: Demonstrable ability to learn and perform splices on various types of rope, including 3-strand, double-braid, and high-modulus single-braid lines.
  • Material Knowledge: Understanding the fundamental differences, properties, and applications of synthetic and natural fiber ropes.
  • Load Dynamics: Basic comprehension of physics principles, including tension, friction, and mechanical advantage, as they apply to rigging.
  • Equipment Inspection: The ability to meticulously inspect ropes and hardware for defects, wear, and potential failure points.
  • Technical Drawing Interpretation: Skill in reading and understanding basic schematics, rigging plots, and technical diagrams.
  • Tool Proficiency: Competence in using and maintaining hand tools specific to the rigging and ropework trade (marlinspikes, fids, cutters, etc.).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years. This is an entry-level apprenticeship; we value aptitude and attitude over extensive experience.

Preferred:

  • Documented experience in a related hobby such as sailing, rock climbing, caving, or decorative knot work (macramé).
  • Prior experience in a general labor role within construction, landscaping, or a warehouse environment where safety protocols were strictly followed.
