Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and translate scientific programming data from clients into comprehensive lab planning documents and conceptual designs for R&D, clinical, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Create detailed, scaled floor plans, elevations, and 3D models of laboratory spaces using Revit and AutoCAD to visualize and document design intent.
  • Lead and facilitate client meetings, user group workshops, and visioning sessions to gather detailed requirements, present design concepts, and guide decision-making processes.
  • Collaborate intensively with end-users, principal investigators, scientists, and researchers to deeply understand their specific workflows, equipment needs, and operational protocols.
  • Select, specify, and schedule appropriate laboratory casework, fixtures, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and other specialized scientific equipment.
  • Coordinate extensively with architectural and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) engineering teams to ensure the seamless integration of complex building systems with specific lab requirements.
  • Ensure all laboratory designs rigorously comply with relevant codes, standards, and safety guidelines, including NIH, AAALAC, OSHA, NFPA, and local building codes.
  • Develop highly detailed equipment plans, including precise placement, utility matrices, and structural support requirements for large or sensitive scientific instruments.
  • Prepare and review construction documents, technical specifications, and bid packages related to all laboratory components and furnishings.
  • Conduct regular site visits during the construction phase to perform construction administration, respond to RFIs, review submittals, and ensure strict adherence to the design intent.
  • Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging trends, flexible lab concepts, automation, and new technologies in laboratory design and scientific equipment.
  • Develop strategies for flexible and adaptable lab modules that can accommodate future changes in research focus, technology, and instrumentation.
  • Generate compelling presentation materials, including renderings, diagrams, and fly-throughs, to effectively communicate design concepts to non-technical clients and stakeholders.
  • Manage the detailed coordination of specialized lab services, including purified water systems, compressed air, vacuum, and a wide range of process gases.
  • Perform comprehensive code analysis and hazardous material assessments to inform safe, compliant lab layouts and chemical storage strategies.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor junior staff and provide expert guidance on lab planning principles, technical challenges, and industry best practices.
  • Evaluate existing laboratory facilities to identify opportunities for renovation, process flow optimization, and modernization to meet new scientific demands.
  • Assist the business development team in the creation of project proposals, fee estimates, and project schedules for the lab planning scope of work.
  • Develop and maintain an internal library of standard lab details, product information, and design guidelines for firm-wide use.
  • Participate in the value engineering process to identify cost-effective solutions without compromising critical lab functionality, safety, or long-term flexibility.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in Revit for creating and managing complex laboratory models.
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD for 2D detailing and documentation.
  • Deep understanding of laboratory casework, fume hoods (VAV and CAV), biosafety cabinets, and common scientific equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of MEP systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) and their critical integration into lab environments.
  • Comprehensive understanding of lab safety standards and building codes (e.g., NIH Design Requirements Manual, NFPA 45, ASHRAE 110).
  • Proven experience in programming, space planning, and developing detailed room data sheets for scientific facilities.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and coordinate complex architectural and engineering construction documents.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

  • Master's degree in Architecture or an Engineering discipline.
  • Professional licensure (RA, PE) is highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-10 years of progressive experience in architectural or engineering design, with a significant portfolio of work focused on laboratory, healthcare, or other technically complex facilities.

Preferred: Direct experience as a Lab Planner or Lab Architect on projects within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, academic research, or government science sectors. A portfolio showcasing built laboratory projects is strongly preferred.
