Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide strategic vision and scientific leadership for all laboratory activities, ensuring direct alignment with the organization's overarching goals and long-term research and development objectives.
  • Direct and oversee the entire lifecycle of laboratory methods, from the initial development and rigorous validation of new assays and technologies to their successful implementation into routine workflow.
  • Assume full accountability for the laboratory's day-to-day operational management, focusing on workflow optimization, efficient resource allocation, and guaranteeing the highest quality in test performance and data output.
  • Develop, manage, and meticulously track the annual laboratory budget, which includes capital equipment expenditures, operational costs, and staffing plans, to ensure fiscal responsibility and strategic investment.
  • Ensure the laboratory operates in strict, unwavering compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including CLIA, CAP, FDA, GxP, and other relevant accrediting agency standards.
  • Act as the primary liaison and lead the laboratory team during regulatory inspections and external audits, spearheading preparation efforts and formulating effective corrective action plans in response to any findings.
  • Lead, mentor, and cultivate a high-performing, motivated team of scientists, technicians, and support staff, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and robust opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • Manage the complete talent lifecycle for laboratory personnel, including strategic recruitment, hiring, comprehensive onboarding, performance evaluations, and retention strategies, in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Champion and maintain a robust Quality Management System (QMS), overseeing all facets of quality assurance, quality control protocols, and proficiency testing programs to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
  • Foster a dynamic culture of scientific excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, actively encouraging intellectual curiosity and rigorous scientific inquiry among all laboratory team members.
  • Oversee the strategic procurement, ongoing maintenance, and critical calibration of all laboratory equipment and advanced instrumentation, ensuring they consistently meet performance standards.
  • Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for all laboratory functions—such as test turnaround times, quality control metrics, and productivity—implementing improvements as necessary.
  • Serve as the ultimate technical and scientific authority for the laboratory staff, offering expert guidance on complex cases, advanced troubleshooting, and nuanced data interpretation.
  • Lead the planning and execution of complex research projects, from initial concept and grant proposal writing through to data analysis, final interpretation, and publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders, including clinical teams, R&D, and business development, as well as external partners, key opinion leaders, and clients.
  • Drive a proactive safety culture within the laboratory, ensuring universal adherence to all safety protocols, including chemical hygiene plans, biosafety standards, and emergency response procedures.
  • Continuously evaluate the evolving scientific landscape, including emerging technologies, instrumentation, and methodologies, to maintain the lab's competitive advantage and scientific relevance.
  • Oversee the creation, review, and maintenance of all critical laboratory documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety manuals, and quality control records.
  • Effectively delegate responsibilities to supervisors and team leads, empowering them to manage their respective areas while maintaining ultimate accountability for all laboratory outcomes.
  • Represent the laboratory and the organization at scientific conferences, industry symposia, and client meetings, effectively communicating its capabilities and scientific achievements to a broad audience.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field or an M.D. with laboratory certification/experience.

Preferred Education:

  • M.D./Ph.D., or a Ph.D. complemented by a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
  • Board certification (e.g., ABMGG, ABCC) may be required for clinical diagnostic labs.
