Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform a full range of complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses on diverse patient specimens.
- Meticulously prepare patient specimens for examination, ensuring proper identification, handling, and adherence to strict pre-analytical protocols.
- Operate, calibrate, and perform routine and preventative maintenance on a variety of sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, including automated analyzers, microscopes, and molecular platforms.
- Rigorously conduct and document daily, weekly, and monthly quality control (QC) procedures, evaluating results and implementing corrective actions when they fall outside established limits.
- Critically analyze and interpret test results, correlating findings with patient history and clinical conditions to ensure the diagnostic validity of the data.
- Promptly and accurately report critical or life-threatening test results to physicians, nurses, or other designated healthcare personnel in line with established communication protocols.
- Systematically troubleshoot and resolve instrument malfunctions, reagent integrity issues, and complex technical problems to minimize testing delays and maintain result accuracy.
- Actively participate in external proficiency testing programs (e.g., CAP surveys) by analyzing unknown samples and submitting results for peer-group evaluation.
- Maintain comprehensive and error-free records of all tests performed, patient data, quality control results, corrective actions, and instrument maintenance activities.
- Strictly adhere to all laboratory safety procedures, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Assist in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new testing methodologies, instrumentation, and laboratory procedures to advance the lab's capabilities.
- Perform and document instrument-to-instrument and method-to-method correlation studies as required for validating new equipment or procedures.
- Manage the inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained, monitoring expiration dates, and placing orders as necessary.
- Accurately enter and verify patient demographic information and test results within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to ensure data integrity.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to Laboratory Assistants, Phlebotomists, and other members of the laboratory support staff.
- Engage in mandatory and voluntary continuing education activities to remain current with the latest advancements in laboratory medicine, techniques, and regulatory standards.
- Uphold absolute patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations and institutional privacy policies without exception.
- Perform specialized testing in disciplines such as molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry, toxicology, or andrology, based on the specific laboratory's scope of service.
- Contribute to the hands-on training and development of new employees and students during their clinical rotations within the laboratory.
- Evaluate the technical competency of other testing personnel as delegated by the laboratory supervisor, providing constructive feedback and documentation.
- Identify and meticulously document non-conformances, initiating and participating in the investigation and resolution of quality events or process deviations.
- Contribute to the development, review, and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the department to ensure they reflect current best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

- Expertise in manual and automated microscopic analysis of peripheral blood smears, urine sediment, and various body fluids.
- Strong working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and hospital information systems (HIS), such as Epic Beaker, Cerner Millennium, or Meditech.
- Competency in performing core microbiological procedures, including culture setup, organism identification (ID), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
- Experience with blood banking (immunohematology) procedures, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening/identification, crossmatching, and transfusion reaction workups.
- Thorough understanding of quality control principles, statistical analysis (e.g., Westgard rules), and CAP/CLIA/TJC regulatory requirements.
- Ability to perform, document, and interpret results from preventative maintenance and function checks on complex laboratory equipment.

- Competency in performing serological and immunological testing using various methodologies (e.g., ELISA, nephelometry, rapid antigen tests).
- Experience with special coagulation testing, electrophoresis, and other specialized diagnostic assays.
- Skill in identifying crystals, cells, and other elements in body fluids like cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and synovial fluid.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution.
- Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program.
- National certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or as a Medical Technologist (MT) by American Medical Technologists (AMT), or an equivalent certification.
