Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Oversee and streamline all day-to-day laboratory operations, ensuring a safe, efficient, and productive environment for all scientific staff and research activities.
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive preventative maintenance and calibration schedule for all laboratory instrumentation and equipment, minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity.

- Author, review, revise, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory processes, equipment operation, and safety protocols to ensure consistency, compliance, and best practices.
- Collaborate with finance and research leadership to develop, manage, and report on the annual laboratory operational (OpEx) and capital expenditure (CapEx) budgets, diligently tracking spending and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Establish, nurture, and maintain strong professional relationships with key vendors, suppliers, and service providers, negotiating contracts, pricing, and service level agreements to secure the best value.
- Lead laboratory space planning, organization, and renovation projects, coordinating with facilities, architects, and external contractors to meet the evolving needs of research teams and new programs.
- Develop, document, and maintain the laboratory's emergency response and business continuity plans, conducting regular safety drills and ensuring all personnel are trained on appropriate emergency procedures.
- Manage shipping and receiving of all laboratory materials, including hazardous goods, biological samples, and temperature-sensitive reagents, ensuring full compliance with IATA and DOT regulations.
- Coordinate the comprehensive onboarding and recurring training of all laboratory personnel on safety protocols, chemical hygiene, equipment usage, and essential operational procedures.
- Manage service contracts and vendor relationships for critical laboratory services, including waste disposal (biohazardous, chemical, radioactive), lab coats, and specialized equipment repair.
- Act as the primary liaison between the scientific staff and the facilities department to promptly address and resolve any issues related to utilities, HVAC, plumbing, and building maintenance.
- Implement and manage asset tracking systems for all capital equipment, maintaining detailed records of purchase, maintenance history, and eventual decommissioning.
- Oversee the management and maintenance of controlled temperature units (refrigerators, freezers, incubators), including the implementation of remote temperature monitoring systems and alarm response protocols.
- Supervise and mentor junior lab support staff, such as lab assistants or technicians, delegating tasks and fostering their professional development.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the lab by identifying operational bottlenecks, evaluating new technologies, and implementing more efficient workflows and processes.
- Ensure the laboratory's chemical inventory is accurately maintained and compliant with all reporting requirements, and manage the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library.
- Coordinate lab moves and equipment relocations, whether internal or to a new facility, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing research activities.
- Facilitate laboratory audits from internal quality groups or external regulatory agencies, ensuring all documentation is in order and the lab is inspection-ready at all times.
