Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide direct, on-the-floor supervision and guidance to a team of laboratory technicians and assistants, ensuring adherence to established protocols and safety standards.
  • Assist in developing and managing daily work schedules, assignments, and rotations for lab staff to ensure optimal workflow and coverage.
  • Act as the first point of contact for troubleshooting complex instrument failures, assay performance issues, and unexpected results, escalating to the Supervisor when necessary.
  • Oversee and manage laboratory inventory, including reagents, consumables, and personal protective equipment (PPE), by conducting regular stock checks, forecasting needs, and placing orders to prevent operational delays.
  • Participate actively in the development, implementation, and documentation of training programs for new and existing laboratory personnel on standard operating procedures (SOPs) and equipment usage.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including OSHA, as well as quality standards such as CLIA, CAP, and ISO.
  • Conduct and document regular quality control (QC) checks, review QC data for trends or shifts, and initiate corrective actions to maintain the integrity of testing.
  • Assist the Lab Supervisor in preparing for and participating in internal and external audits and inspections, helping to gather documentation and answer inquiries.
  • Perform and review preventative maintenance and calibration procedures on laboratory equipment, maintaining meticulous records and coordinating with service engineers for repairs.
  • Author, review, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other controlled documents to reflect current best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage proficiency testing (PT) programs by ensuring samples are processed correctly, results are submitted on time, and any failures are investigated thoroughly.
  • Evaluate the competency of testing personnel through direct observation, review of records, and other assessment methods, providing constructive feedback and coaching.
  • Take a lead role in the validation and implementation of new laboratory tests, technologies, and instrumentation, including writing validation plans and reports.
  • Mediate interpersonal issues within the lab team, fostering a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment.
  • Generate and review various laboratory reports, including daily logs, quality metrics, and productivity summaries for review by management.
  • Serve as a key technical resource for the team, providing expert guidance on specimen processing, analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., Phlebotomy, Client Services, Research & Development) to resolve issues and ensure seamless interdepartmental workflow.
  • Lead daily team huddles or meetings to communicate important updates, safety reminders, and daily goals.
  • Investigate and document patient or sample-related incidents, errors, and deviations using root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Assist with performance evaluations by providing direct feedback to the Lab Supervisor on the technical skills and professional conduct of team members.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for process optimization, waste reduction, and efficiency gains within the lab.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to investigate performance trends or troubleshoot systemic issues.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term laboratory strategy by providing input on new technologies and workflow enhancements.
  • Collaborate with IT and LIMS administrators to translate laboratory needs into system enhancements or new reporting requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning, agile ceremonies, or project management meetings for laboratory-specific initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Instrumentation Proficiency: Expertise in operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting a wide range of complex laboratory analyzers and equipment (e.g., mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, automated chemistry/hematology analyzers).
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS): Deep understanding and practical experience with quality standards such as CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189, or GLP/GMP.
  • Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS): Proficiency with LIMS for sample accessioning, tracking, results entry, and generating reports.
  • Method Validation & Verification: Proven ability to design and execute validation studies for new laboratory tests and instruments.
  • Inventory Control Systems: Experience using software or manual systems for tracking and ordering laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Formal or informal training in RCA methodologies to investigate non-conformances and implement effective CAPAs.
  • Biosafety and Chemical Safety: In-depth knowledge of safety protocols, including proper handling of biohazardous materials, chemical hygiene plans, and use of PPE.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • In some clinical settings, an Associate's degree combined with significant experience and appropriate certification (e.g., MLT) may be considered.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a specialized scientific field.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Technologist (e.g., ASCP), or equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in a clinical, research, or production laboratory environment.

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a leadership or mentorship capacity, such as a Lead Technologist, trainer, or key operator for a specific lab section. Experience in a high-complexity, accredited laboratory is highly desirable.
