Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform a range of routine and specialized laboratory tests and experiments following precisely detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under the direct supervision of senior lab personnel.
- Accurately prepare, label, and log biological or chemical samples for analysis, ensuring proper handling and storage to maintain sample integrity throughout the testing lifecycle.
- Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on a variety of standard laboratory instruments and equipment, such as centrifuges, microscopes, spectrophotometers, and pH meters.
- Meticulously record all experimental data, observations, and results in physical laboratory notebooks and digital Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) with a high degree of accuracy.
- Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, media, and stains for use in experiments, calculating concentrations and performing serial dilutions with precision.
- Master and consistently apply aseptic and sterile techniques to prevent contamination, particularly within microbiology, molecular biology, or cell culture environments.
- Conduct routine quality control checks and assays on samples and equipment to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and reproducibility of test results.
- Assist senior technicians and scientists in setting up and executing more complex experiments and research projects, providing hands-on support as directed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory workspace by cleaning glassware, sterilizing equipment, and managing work areas according to safety and housekeeping guidelines.
- Properly handle, store, and dispose of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, and sharps in strict accordance with all institutional and regulatory safety protocols (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
- Perform basic data entry and generate simple reports from analytical results for review by a supervisor, ensuring clarity and correctness of the information presented.
- Execute fundamental molecular biology techniques, such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis, following established protocols under guidance.
- Collect and process clinical or environmental samples, ensuring correct patient/source identification and adherence to chain-of-custody and collection procedures.
- Troubleshoot minor issues with laboratory equipment and analytical processes, documenting the problem and solution, and escalating more complex problems to senior staff.
- Prepare slides for microscopic analysis, including the critical steps of fixing, staining, and mounting specimens for examination.
Secondary Functions
- Monitor and manage inventory levels of laboratory supplies, consumables, and reagents, assisting with placing orders and restocking to prevent work disruptions.
