Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Receive, accession, and process a high volume of clinical or research specimens (e.g., blood, tissue, urine) with exceptional accuracy, ensuring proper labeling and tracking in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Perform precise sample preparation for downstream analysis, which may include aliquoting, centrifugation, extraction, and dilution according to strict standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Prepare and quality-control a variety of complex chemical solutions, reagents, buffers, and culture media required for analytical testing and experimentation.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine daily/weekly maintenance on standard laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, centrifuges, pH meters, balances, and automated liquid handlers.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile, and organized laboratory environment by cleaning and decontaminating workbenches, glassware, and equipment to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Meticulously document all activities, observations, and results in official laboratory notebooks and electronic databases, ensuring compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and data integrity standards.
  • Manage laboratory inventory by monitoring stock levels of reagents, consumables, and personal protective equipment (PPE), placing orders, and unpacking/storing supplies upon arrival.
  • Adhere to and enforce all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling and disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste, to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Assist senior laboratory staff and scientists in the execution of routine experiments, including tasks like setting up assays, running gels, and performing basic cell culture maintenance.
  • Prepare and package biological samples for shipment to other facilities or for long-term storage, ensuring compliance with all relevant shipping regulations (e.g., IATA).
  • Perform data entry tasks with a high degree of accuracy, transferring results from instruments to the LIMS or other tracking systems.
  • Conduct and document daily quality control checks on equipment and reagents to ensure the reliability and accuracy of laboratory data.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common issues with laboratory equipment and analytical processes under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Retrieve and organize stored samples from freezers and refrigerators for testing, maintaining an accurate chain of custody throughout the process.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new and existing laboratory processes.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs to help ensure the laboratory meets all accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the validation of new laboratory equipment and testing methodologies by performing repetitive tasks and recording data.
  • Archive and maintain comprehensive records, test results, and reports in an organized and easily retrievable manner.
  • Communicate effectively with other laboratory staff, researchers, and departments to coordinate workflow and resolve sample-related inquiries.
  • Train new, less-experienced laboratory assistants on basic lab procedures, safety protocols, and equipment operation.
  • Escalate any out-of-spec results, equipment malfunctions, or deviations from protocol to the Laboratory Supervisor or Manager in a timely manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Specimen Processing: Expertise in handling, accessioning, and preparing biological samples for analysis.
  • Aseptic Technique: Proficiency in sterile techniques to prevent contamination in molecular biology, microbiology, or cell culture work.
  • Laboratory Equipment Operation: Hands-on experience with common lab equipment like centrifuges, autoclaves, pipettes, balances, and microscopes.
