Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively manage and maintain a comprehensive inventory of all laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, including forecasting needs, placing orders with approved vendors, and ensuring timely stocking to prevent operational delays.
  • Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and repair schedules for all laboratory equipment, acting as the primary liaison with service engineers and maintaining detailed service records to ensure minimal downtime.
  • Champion and enforce all laboratory safety protocols and procedures in compliance with OSHA, EHS, and other regulatory bodies, including conducting safety orientations for new personnel.
  • Manage the laboratory's chemical inventory and safety data sheet (SDS) library, ensuring all materials are stored correctly and documentation is up-to-date and accessible.
  • Coordinate the proper collection, labeling, and disposal of all chemical, biological, and hazardous waste, adhering strictly to institutional and federal guidelines.
  • Develop, author, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory operations, equipment use, and safety practices to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Provide comprehensive onboarding and training to new students, technicians, and research staff on laboratory protocols, equipment operation, and safety procedures.
  • Serve as the primary administrative point of contact for the lab, managing purchasing, processing invoices, tracking expenditures against the lab budget, and preparing financial reports.
  • Maintain the overall organization, cleanliness, and functionality of the laboratory space, including shared benchtops, equipment rooms, and storage areas, to foster a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Prepare and sterilize common laboratory solutions, media, and buffers for general lab use, ensuring quality control and proper labeling.
  • Assist researchers and technical staff with the setup and logistical planning of experiments, ensuring all necessary resources and equipment are available and operational.
  • Manage and maintain cell culture facilities, including monitoring incubators, biosafety cabinets, and liquid nitrogen freezers, and overseeing shared cell line stocks.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all facility-related issues, coordinating with building management and maintenance teams to resolve problems promptly.
  • Maintain meticulous and organized laboratory records, including equipment logs, training records, safety compliance documents, and inventory lists, for audit and inspection purposes.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of biological samples, chemicals, and equipment, ensuring compliance with all shipping regulations (e.g., IATA/DOT).

Secondary Functions

  • Support principal investigators and lab managers in gathering data for grant proposals, progress reports, and publications.
  • Assist in the preparation for and execution of internal and external laboratory audits and inspections, ensuring all documentation is in order.
  • Organize and coordinate laboratory group meetings, seminars, and other lab-related events, including scheduling and logistical arrangements.
  • Evaluate and recommend new laboratory equipment, technologies, and workflow management systems to improve operational efficiency and research capabilities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Inventory Management Systems: Proficiency with lab inventory software (e.g., Quartzy, LabGuru) and procurement platforms.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of laboratory safety standards and regulations (e.g., OSHA, GLP, GMP, CLIA).
  • Equipment Maintenance: Hands-on experience with troubleshooting, calibrating, and maintaining common laboratory equipment like centrifuges, autoclaves, microscopes, and PCR machines.
  • Chemical Safety Management: Expertise in handling chemicals, managing Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and implementing proper waste disposal protocols.
  • Aseptic & Sterile Technique: Demonstrated proficiency in sterile techniques for media preparation and cell culture maintenance.
  • Computer Proficiency: Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel for budgeting and tracking) and familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
