Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Serve as the CLIA-certified Laboratory Director for a high-complexity testing environment, holding ultimate responsibility for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory.
  • Provide strong scientific leadership and clinical oversight for all diagnostic testing processes, from pre-analytical and analytical to post-analytical phases, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and quality.
  • Direct the development, validation, and implementation of new, innovative laboratory assays, platforms, and technologies to expand the service menu and enhance diagnostic capabilities.
  • Develop and manage the annual laboratory budget, including capital expenditures, operational costs, and staffing, ensuring fiscal responsibility and resource optimization.
  • Lead, mentor, and professionally develop a diverse team of laboratory personnel, including managers, supervisors, and technical staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and scientific excellence.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and accreditation standards, including CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189, and state-specific requirements.
  • Act as the primary liaison during regulatory inspections and audits, taking charge of responses, corrective action plans, and preventative measures.
  • Oversee the comprehensive Quality Management System (QMS), driving continuous improvement initiatives and ensuring all quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance programs are robust and effective.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the laboratory, including turnaround times, quality metrics, and productivity, reporting findings to executive leadership.
  • Direct the selection, implementation, and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and information systems (LIMS), ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the lab.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with clinical, research, business development, and executive teams to align laboratory strategy with organizational goals.
  • Review and approve all laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring they are current, comprehensive, and meticulously followed by all staff.
  • Resolve complex scientific, technical, and personnel-related issues, providing expert guidance and making critical decisions to maintain operational integrity.
  • Champion a robust laboratory safety program, ensuring a safe working environment in compliance with all EHS regulations and biosafety standards.
  • Cultivate and manage key relationships with external stakeholders, including clinical partners, physicians, research collaborators, and vendors.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in laboratory medicine, diagnostic technologies, and regulatory changes to inform strategic planning and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Oversee all aspects of personnel management, including recruitment, hiring, training, competency assessment, and performance evaluations for the entire laboratory staff.
  • Provide clinical consultation to healthcare providers and clients regarding test selection, interpretation of results, and follow-up testing.
  • Drive the strategic vision for laboratory growth, including service line expansion, automation initiatives, and entrance into new markets.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Ph.D. in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science.
  • OR an M.D. or D.O. with board certification in a relevant specialty.

  • MBA in addition to a scientific terminal degree, providing strong business and financial management skills.
  • Board Certification (e.g., ABMGG, ABCC, ABB, ABP) is highly preferred and often required.
