Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop comprehensive and innovative master plans and site designs from initial conceptualization through to detailed construction documentation.
  • Prepare and present compelling design proposals, including detailed drawings, 3D models, photorealistic renderings, and reports to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct thorough site analysis and inventory, including assessment of environmental conditions, topography, hydrology, vegetation, and existing infrastructure to inform design strategies.
  • Integrate principles of sustainable design, such as green infrastructure, stormwater management, native planting palettes, and ecological restoration, into all project phases.
  • Collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams, including architects, civil engineers, urban planners, and environmental scientists, to ensure cohesive and integrated project delivery.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, consultant coordination, and internal resources to ensure projects are completed on time and within financial constraints.
  • Produce high-quality, accurate construction documents, technical specifications, and detailed cost estimates for bidding and construction purposes.
  • Oversee the construction administration phase, including conducting regular site observation visits, responding to contractor RFIs, reviewing submittals, and processing change orders to ensure design intent is fully realized.
  • Lead and facilitate public and community engagement processes, including workshops, presentations, and meetings to gather input and build consensus for public realm projects.
  • Research, specify, and select appropriate materials, site furnishings, lighting, and construction techniques suitable for specific site conditions, climate, and project goals.
  • Navigate complex permitting processes and secure necessary approvals from local, state, and federal regulatory bodies.
  • Utilize advanced software for design, modeling, and visualization, including AutoCAD, Land F/X, SketchUp, Lumion, and Adobe Creative Suite to communicate design ideas.
  • Lead the design process for a diverse range of project types, including public parks, urban plazas, corporate and institutional campuses, residential communities, and habitat restoration.
  • Develop thoughtful planting plans that are aesthetically compelling, ecologically functional, and resilient to local climate conditions and maintenance requirements.
  • Create detailed grading and drainage plans to artfully shape the land, manage site hydrology effectively, and integrate with civil engineering systems.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff and interns, providing design direction, technical oversight, and reviewing their work for quality and accuracy.
  • Prepare and contribute to the development of fee proposals, responses to RFPs/RFQs, and client interviews to support business development efforts.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through clear, proactive communication, responsive service, and successful project management.
  • Generate illustrative graphics and compelling narratives for reports, presentations, and marketing materials.
  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, new materials, and innovative technologies in landscape architecture and sustainable design.

Secondary Functions

  • Support business development activities by contributing to proposals, interviews, and the creation of marketing collateral.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CAD & Documentation: High proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Land F/X for creating precise and detailed construction documents.
  • 3D Modeling & Visualization: Advanced skills in 3D modeling software such as SketchUp, Rhino, and rendering engines like Lumion, V-Ray, or Enscape.
  • Graphic Communication: Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) for creating compelling presentation graphics, diagrams, and reports.
  • Horticultural Knowledge: Strong knowledge of plant materials, soil science, planting design, and regional ecology.
  • Site Engineering: Solid understanding of grading, drainage design, and stormwater management principles and best practices.
  • Construction Expertise: Experience with construction documentation, technical specifications, and cost estimating.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture (BLA) from an accredited university.

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture (MLA) from an accredited university.
  • Professional Licensure as a Landscape Architect (PLA) is highly preferred.
