Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Direct, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of a landscape crew of 3-5 members, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest quality standards.
- Plan and execute daily and weekly work schedules for landscape installation or maintenance projects, assigning tasks to crew members based on their skills and project requirements.
- Read, interpret, and implement landscape plans, blueprints, and specifications to ensure the accurate installation of softscapes and hardscapes.
- Operate and oversee the proper use of a wide variety of landscaping equipment, including commercial mowers, skid steers, mini-excavators, loaders, and various power tools.
- Ensure all work is performed in strict compliance with company policies, safety regulations (OSHA), and industry best practices to maintain a zero-incident work environment.
- Manage on-site logistics, including the timely ordering, delivery, and strategic placement of materials like plants, soil, mulch, stone, and pavers.
- Perform and supervise all aspects of high-end landscape maintenance, including precise mowing, string trimming, expert pruning, fertilization, and integrated pest/weed management.
- Lead the installation of complex hardscape features such as paver patios, stone walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor kitchen areas according to detailed plans.
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair low-voltage landscape lighting and professional-grade irrigation systems to ensure optimal performance and water efficiency.
- Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for clients, maintaining a professional and courteous line of communication to address questions, provide progress updates, and manage expectations.
- Conduct regular site inspections before, during, and after project phases to ensure unwavering quality control and adherence to project timelines.
- Accurately track and document crew labor hours, material usage, and daily project progress using company software or designated reporting forms.
- Proactively identify and solve on-site challenges, such as unexpected soil conditions or material shortages, making decisive judgments to keep projects on track.
- Manage and maintain the health and vitality of all plant materials, ensuring proper installation techniques, watering schedules, and the ability to identify and treat common pests and diseases.
- Coordinate effectively with project managers, landscape designers, and subcontractors to ensure a seamless and integrated project execution from start to finish.
- Champion a culture of safety by conducting daily "tailgate" safety briefings and ensuring all crew members consistently use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Secondary Functions
- Train and mentor new and existing crew members on proper horticultural techniques, specialized equipment operation, and critical safety protocols.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor on-site repairs on vehicles and equipment to ensure operational readiness and minimize downtime.
- Manage on-site inventory of tools and small supplies, communicating needs to the Operations Manager to prevent work stoppages.
- Assist in the employee performance review process by providing constructive, firsthand feedback on crew members' skills, development, and work ethic.
- Ensure job sites are kept impeccably clean, organized, and safe for the crew, clients, and the public throughout the project lifecycle.
- Manage snow and ice removal operations during winter months, including scheduling, crew supervision, and equipment management (as applicable).
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert Plant Identification: In-depth knowledge of regional trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals, including their growth habits and care requirements.
- Hardscape Installation: Proven ability to install pavers, natural stone, and retaining walls with precision.
- Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating skid steers, mini-excavators, trenchers, and other heavy landscaping machinery safely and effectively.
- Irrigation Systems: Strong understanding of the installation, repair, and maintenance of commercial and residential irrigation systems.
