Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up and operate high-powered CNC laser cutting machines (e.g., CO2, Fiber) to process materials like stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, and other alloys.
- Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to determine cutting parameters, material requirements, and operational sequences.
- Select and load appropriate cutting programs into the machine's control module, making minor edits or adjustments to G-code or M-code as needed for optimization.
- Load and unload large sheets of raw material onto the machine's cutting bed using forklifts, overhead cranes, or manual lifting techniques, ensuring proper alignment.
- Carefully monitor the cutting process to ensure the machine is operating correctly and the parts are being fabricated according to exact specifications.
- Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments, including digital calipers, micrometers, protractors, and tape measures.
- Verify that finished parts conform to all dimensional tolerances and quality standards outlined in the blueprints and production documents.
- Adjust machine settings, such as laser power, cutting speed, and gas pressure, to optimize cut quality, minimize dross, and maximize material utilization.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the laser machine, including cleaning lenses and mirrors, checking gas levels, and clearing debris from the work area.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor machine malfunctions or cutting issues, escalating more complex problems to the maintenance department or a supervisor.
- Unload finished parts from the nested sheet (skeleton), carefully separating them and removing any sharp edges or burrs using deburring tools.
- Accurately count, sort, and label finished parts, preparing them for the next stage of production, such as forming, welding, or finishing.
- Document all production activities, including job numbers, material usage, part counts, and any non-conformances, in the company's ERP or tracking system.
- Maximize material yield by effectively nesting parts within the cutting program and managing remnants for future use.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by adhering to all company safety policies, procedures, and 5S principles.
- Collaborate with programmers and engineers to provide feedback on part manufacturability and suggest improvements for cutting efficiency.
- Manage inventory of consumables related to the laser machine, such as nozzles, lenses, and assist gases, and report when supplies are low.
- Perform daily safety checks on the machine and associated equipment, ensuring all safety guards and emergency stops are fully functional.
- Operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts and pallet jacks, to move raw materials and finished parts throughout the facility.
- Cross-train on other fabrication equipment as required to support overall team and production goals.
