Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC laser cutting machines (e.g., Trumpf, Bystronic, Amada) to process materials like steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, geometric dimensions, and tolerances (GD&T) to determine cutting parameters and part requirements.
  • Select and load the correct programs, machine parameters, and cutting settings based on material type, thickness, and job specifications.
  • Safely and efficiently load raw sheet materials onto the laser cutting table using overhead cranes, forklifts, or manual methods, and unload finished parts, nests, and scrap skeletons.
  • Conduct first-article and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring tools such as digital calipers, micrometers, protractors, and tape measures to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Perform routine operator-level maintenance, including cleaning lenses and nozzles, checking gas pressures, and ensuring the machine is in optimal cutting condition.
  • Adjust cutting speeds, power settings, and gas flows during operation to maintain cut quality and optimize machine efficiency.
  • Monitor machine operations closely to detect and troubleshoot malfunctions, such as cutting errors, material jams, or program issues, making necessary adjustments to prevent defects.
  • Deburr, sand, or grind parts as needed to remove sharp edges and prepare them for the next stage of production, such as forming or welding.
  • Nest parts efficiently within a program to maximize material utilization and minimize scrap, occasionally making minor edits to existing CNC programs.
  • Accurately document production data, including parts produced, cycle times, and scrap rates, using the company's ERP system or manual logs.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by adhering to all safety protocols, 5S principles, and company policies.
  • Manage the inventory of consumables like lenses, nozzles, and assist gases (Oxygen, Nitrogen), reporting any shortages to the supervisor.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality control, and other production departments to resolve fabrication issues and ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement to enhance quality, reduce cycle time, and increase overall efficiency.
  • Carefully package and identify finished parts according to work orders to ensure they are correctly routed to subsequent manufacturing processes.
  • Perform basic file management and program retrieval from the network server to the machine controller.
  • Change and align laser optics and nozzles to ensure the integrity of the laser beam and cut quality across different materials.
  • Read and understand production schedules and work orders to prioritize jobs and meet delivery deadlines.
  • Assist in the training of new or less-experienced operators, sharing knowledge of best practices for machine operation and safety.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in routine preventative maintenance activities alongside the maintenance team to ensure machine longevity and performance.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions from the production floor.
  • Assist in other fabrication areas, such as material handling or parts finishing, during periods of fluctuating workload.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts of raw materials and report discrepancies to the inventory control team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC Laser Operation: Proven ability to set up and operate CNC laser cutters (experience with specific brands like Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic is highly valued).
  • Blueprint Reading: Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and work orders.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using metrology tools like calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and protractors to ensure parts meet tight tolerances.
  • Material Handling: Experience safely operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and/or overhead cranes to move heavy sheet materials.
  • Basic CNC Programming: Ability to read, understand, and perform minor edits to G-code and M-code at the machine controller.
  • Computer Literacy: Basic computer skills for retrieving programs from a network and entering data into an ERP or MES system.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: A solid understanding of machine mechanics for basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Shop Math: Competency in performing calculations involving fractions, decimals, and basic geometry.
  • Gas & Optics Knowledge: Understanding the function of different assist gases (N2, O2) and the basics of laser optic maintenance and alignment.
  • Fabrication Fundamentals: Knowledge of different metal types (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum) and their properties during cutting.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
