Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead and perform complex diagnostics on all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, drivetrain, electrical, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), using sophisticated diagnostic equipment and software.
- Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to a team of automotive technicians, fostering a culture of continuous learning and skill development through hands-on coaching and formal training sessions.
- Manage the daily workflow and delegate repair orders to technicians based on their skill level, job complexity, and shop priorities to optimize efficiency and minimize vehicle downtime.
- Conduct final quality control inspections on completed repairs to ensure all work meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications and our rigorous internal quality standards before vehicle release.
- Serve as the ultimate technical resource for the shop, tackling the most challenging and intermittent vehicle problems that other technicians are unable to resolve.
- Communicate complex technical diagnoses and repair recommendations clearly and effectively to service advisors and customers, ensuring they understand the necessity and scope of the proposed work.
- Maintain and enforce strict adherence to all shop safety protocols and environmental regulations, leading by example to create a safe and compliant working environment for the entire team.
- Assist the Service Manager in evaluating technician performance, providing constructive feedback, and identifying areas for improvement or additional training.
- Research and interpret complex technical service bulletins (TSBs), wiring diagrams, and manufacturer repair procedures to ensure all repairs are performed accurately and efficiently.
- Manage and maintain all shop-level diagnostic tools, specialized equipment, and software, ensuring they are up-to-date, calibrated, and in proper working order.
- Diagnose, service, and repair hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) systems, including high-voltage batteries, electric motors, and charging systems, while adhering to all safety precautions.
- Prioritize and oversee the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles, developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules to ensure reliability and longevity.
- Document all diagnostic steps, repairs performed, and parts used with meticulous detail in the shop management system for accurate record-keeping, billing, and vehicle history.
- Provide expert guidance on warranty repair claims, ensuring all documentation and procedures align with manufacturer requirements to maximize claim approval.
- Lead the team in maintaining a clean, organized, and professional shop environment that reflects the high quality of the work performed.
- Assist in the sourcing and vetting of parts and materials, working with the parts department to ensure the availability of high-quality components for timely repairs.
- Road-test vehicles before and after repairs to verify customer complaints and confirm that all issues have been successfully resolved.
- Develop and implement standardized diagnostic and repair processes to improve consistency, efficiency, and quality across the technical team.
- Stay current with emerging automotive technologies, industry trends, and new repair techniques by actively participating in ongoing training and certification programs.
- Act as a liaison between the technical staff and management, communicating shop needs, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
- Perform advanced engine performance diagnostics, including fuel trim analysis, emissions system testing, and oscilloscope usage to pinpoint intricate drivability issues.
- Oversee and perform major component replacements and overhauls, such as engine and transmission rebuilds or replacements, guiding other technicians through the process.
Secondary Functions
- Assist the Service Manager in interviewing and assessing the technical skills of potential new technicians.
- Contribute to the development and management of the shop's tool and equipment budget by identifying needs and evaluating new technology.
- Support the parts department with inventory management, including identifying critical stock levels and obsolete parts.
