Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead, guide, and mentor a team of van drivers, providing on-the-job training, constructive feedback, and daily support to ensure operational excellence and team cohesion.
  • Operate a company van to execute delivery routes, acting as an exemplary model for safe driving techniques, customer service interactions, and adherence to company procedures.
  • Coordinate and assign daily routes to the driver team, utilizing routing software and local knowledge to optimize for efficiency, minimize mileage, and meet delivery windows.
  • Serve as the primary on-road point of contact for the driver team, actively troubleshooting logistical issues such as traffic delays, vehicle malfunctions, or customer site challenges.
  • Enforce and audit the completion of daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, ensuring all drivers accurately document vehicle condition and report defects immediately.
  • Oversee the correct and safe loading, securing, and unloading of all cargo, guaranteeing that goods are handled with care and all documentation is accurately completed.
  • Champion a culture of safety by ensuring strict team-wide adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, local traffic laws, and internal safety protocols.
  • Maintain and audit crucial operational records, including driver logs, delivery manifests, fuel receipts, and vehicle maintenance reports, ensuring 100% compliance and accuracy.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of driver training programs, covering topics such as defensive driving, customer service excellence, and use of new technology.
  • Conduct regular performance audits and ride-alongs with drivers to evaluate driving skills, procedural compliance, and quality of customer interaction, providing coaching where needed.
  • Facilitate clear and constant communication between drivers, dispatch, warehouse personnel, and management to report on team progress, delivery status, and operational hurdles.
  • Professionally manage and resolve escalated customer service issues or complex delivery requests, finding effective solutions to maintain and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor the condition of the assigned van fleet, coordinating with the Fleet Supervisor or maintenance vendors to schedule preventative maintenance and necessary repairs promptly.
  • Ensure team proficiency with handheld scanners, tablets, and other onboard technologies used for package tracking, proof of delivery capture, and real-time status updates.
  • Lead brief daily team huddles to cover safety topics, discuss route specifics, review performance metrics, and set clear objectives for the day.
  • Investigate and compile detailed reports on any vehicle accidents, workplace incidents, or property damage, assisting in root cause analysis to prevent future occurrences.
  • Manage the inventory of essential driver supplies, including handheld devices, uniforms, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and process reorder requests as needed.
  • Guarantee that all vehicles are maintained in a clean, organized, and professional state, fully equipped with required safety gear like fire extinguishers and first-aid kits.
  • Provide route coverage for open routes resulting from call-offs, vacation, or increased volume, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to operational success.
  • Contribute substantive, observation-based feedback to management for formal driver performance reviews and development plans.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement in routing, package handling, fuel efficiency, or safety procedures.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the warehouse team with sorting, staging, and loading packages during peak periods or when operational needs require cross-functional support.
  • Participate actively in safety committee meetings, offering valuable frontline perspectives on potential hazards and contributing to safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the dispatch and routing teams to provide real-world feedback on route plans, time estimates, and potential long-term optimization strategies.
  • Support administrative functions by helping to audit driver paperwork, fuel card usage logs, and other operational data for accuracy and compliance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid state-issued Driver's License with a clean and verifiable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Deep knowledge of local and regional geography, including traffic patterns, construction zones, and efficient alternative routes.
  • In-depth understanding and practical application of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and Hours of Service (HOS) rules.
  • Proficiency in operating various models of commercial cargo vans (e.g., Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Ram ProMaster).
  • Skilled in using GPS navigation systems and route optimization software/applications effectively.
  • Competency with handheld scanners, mobile devices, and proprietary delivery management applications for tracking and proof of delivery.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive pre-trip/post-trip vehicle inspections and identify common mechanical issues.
  • Experience with completing, auditing, and maintaining accurate driver logs, delivery manifests, and vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs).
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment, such as manual pallet jacks and hand trucks, for loading and unloading.
  • Certification in Defensive Driving or a demonstrated commitment to obtaining such a certification.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 5-7 years of professional commercial driving experience.

Preferred:

  • Verifiable experience in a fast-paced environment such as last-mile delivery, parcel services, medical courier, or B2B logistics.
