🎯 Role Definition

As a key member of our world-building team, the Level Artist is the architect of the player's visual journey. You will collaborate closely with Level Designers, Concept Artists, and Technical Artists to bring the game's vision to life. Your primary mission is to take foundational level blockouts and use your artistic eye and technical skills to craft fully realized, aesthetically stunning, and emotionally resonant environments. This involves everything from asset placement and terrain sculpting to intricate lighting and final polish, all while adhering to the game's art direction and performance budgets. You are not just building a level; you are creating a memorable place that players will want to explore.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Collaborate with Level Designers to translate their greybox layouts into visually compelling and playable game environments that enhance the intended gameplay experience.
  • Populate scenes with 3D props, foliage, and architectural assets, ensuring that placements follow the principles of strong composition and visual storytelling.
  • Create and implement high-quality lighting solutions, including global illumination, baked lighting, and dynamic lights, to establish mood, direct the player's eye, and ensure visual clarity.
  • Take ownership of entire levels or sections of the game world, from initial art pass and set dressing to final polish and bug fixing.
  • Sculpt and paint terrain, blend materials, and place decals to create natural-looking and detailed ground surfaces that feel authentic to the game world.
  • Ensure all levels and environments are optimized to meet strict performance targets (framerate, memory usage, draw calls) across all target platforms without sacrificing artistic quality.
  • Work closely with the Art Director and Lead Artist to maintain a cohesive and consistent visual style that aligns with the established art direction.
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot visual and technical issues within the levels, such as asset collisions, light-map errors, and performance drops.
  • Implement and fine-tune post-processing effects, atmospheric fog, and skyboxes to enhance the final visual presentation and mood of the environment.
  • Create simple, effective proxy meshes and blockouts for asset requests to aid the environment modeling team.
  • Manage and respect the technical constraints and asset budgets for each level, making smart artistic decisions to maximize visual impact.
  • Participate in regular art reviews, providing and gracefully receiving constructive feedback to and from your peers and leads.
  • Research and gather a wide range of visual reference materials to inform the creation of believable and engaging game worlds.
  • Work within the designated game engine (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity) to assemble and integrate all visual elements of a level.
  • Help establish and document best practices, pipelines, and workflows for world-building and environment art creation.
  • Author and apply material shaders to surfaces and assets to achieve the desired look and texture fidelity.
  • Place and configure reflection probes, light probes, and other engine-specific lighting tools to achieve realistic and performant reflections and indirect lighting.
  • Collaborate with VFX artists to integrate environmental effects like waterfalls, dust motes, and ambient particles that enhance the scene's dynamism and immersion.
  • Set up cinematic-quality environments for in-game cutscenes, ensuring they align with the look and feel of the playable areas.
  • Continuously seek to improve your skills and stay updated on the latest industry techniques, tools, and technologies in real-time graphics and environment art.

Secondary Functions

  • Support performance profiling and analysis of level art assets to identify optimization opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the art pipeline, tools, and technical best practices.
  • Collaborate with business units, particularly marketing, to capture high-quality screenshots and video footage for promotional materials.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies within the art and development teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency with modern game engines such as Unreal Engine (UE4/UE5) or Unity, including their terrain, lighting, and material systems.
  • Strong 3D asset integration, set dressing, and world-building skills.
  • Expertise in 3D modeling and sculpting software like Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, or ZBrush.
  • Advanced knowledge of PBR texturing workflows using tools like Substance Painter, Substance Designer, and Photoshop.
  • A strong understanding of art fundamentals, including composition, color theory, form, silhouette, and lighting.
  • Proven experience with real-time lighting techniques, both static (baked) and dynamic.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of performance optimization techniques for real-time 3D environments.
  • Experience with creating and blending complex materials within a game engine.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Perforce or Git.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing high-quality, game-ready environments and a breakdown of your work on them.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, with a standout portfolio being the primary requirement.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or a specialized diploma from a college or art school.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of professional experience as a Level Artist, Environment Artist, or a similar role in the game industry.

Preferred:

  • Shipped at least one AAA or significant AA title in a level/environment art capacity.
