Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a Class 2/LGV C rigid vehicle in a safe, professional, and economical manner, adhering to all current road traffic regulations and company procedures.
  • Complete daily, comprehensive pre- and post-trip vehicle walk-around inspections, meticulously reporting any defects, damages, or maintenance needs promptly through the correct channels.
  • Manage and execute a demanding schedule of multi-drop deliveries and collections, ensuring all consignments are delivered to commercial and residential customers on time and in perfect condition.
  • Ensure all loads are safely and securely strapped, restrained, and distributed within the vehicle prior to departure and throughout the journey, complying with DVSA and company standards.
  • Accurately and diligently use a digital tachograph card, ensuring full compliance with EU drivers' hours and Working Time Directive (WTD) regulations to ensure personal and public safety.
  • Provide exceptional customer service upon arrival at delivery points, acting as a professional, courteous, and helpful representative of the company at all times.
  • Utilise handheld electronic devices (PDAs) or manual paperwork to accurately capture proof of delivery (PODs), obtain customer signatures, and report any delivery discrepancies, shortages, or damages.
  • Navigate routes effectively using a combination of satellite navigation and local knowledge, proactively adapting to traffic, road closures, and diversions to maintain delivery schedules.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the transport office, providing regular updates on progress, reporting delays, or highlighting any issues encountered during your route.
  • Safely operate vehicle equipment such as tail lifts, pump trucks, or other mechanical handling equipment to load and unload goods in accordance with health and safety guidelines.
  • Uphold a high standard of cleanliness and presentation for your allocated vehicle, both internally and externally, reflecting the professional image of the company.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and client-specific health and safety policies, including correct manual handling techniques and following site-specific safety rules at customer premises.
  • Actively assist with the loading and unloading of your vehicle at the depot, working collaboratively with warehouse staff to ensure load accuracy and efficiency.
  • Manage and complete all required delivery paperwork, including run sheets, collection notes, and return logs, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform ad-hoc collections from suppliers or other depots as required by the transport planning team, ensuring all goods are checked for quantity and condition before loading.
  • Handle customer queries or complaints at the point of delivery in a polite and professional manner, escalating to the transport office for resolution when necessary.
  • Proactively plan your workday to comply with legal driving limits, including required breaks, to ensure you remain safe, alert, and legally compliant.
  • Conduct dynamic risk assessments at unfamiliar or challenging delivery points to ensure a safe unloading environment for yourself, your vehicle, and the public.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, or near misses immediately and accurately to the transport management team in line with established company procedure.
  • Participate actively in mandatory driver training, including Driver CPC modules, toolbox talks, and health and safety refreshers to maintain skills and compliance.
  • Contribute to route optimisation and operational efficiency by providing feedback to the transport office on challenging delivery points, traffic patterns, or potential improvements.
  • Handle returned goods, empty cages, and pallets responsibly, ensuring they are correctly documented and securely loaded for return to the depot.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid and in-date Category C (LGV Class 2) driving licence.
  • Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification card.
  • Valid Digital Tachograph Driver Card.
  • A strong and demonstrable understanding of EU driver hours and Working Time Directive (WTD) regulations.
  • Proven competence in operating vehicle-mounted equipment such as tail lifts and electric/manual pump trucks.
  • Knowledge of safe loading and load security principles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A good standard of literacy and numeracy is required. GCSEs in English and Maths are advantageous but not essential.

Preferred Education:

Possession of additional certifications such as HIAB (Lorry Loader Crane), Moffett (Truck Mounted Forklift), or ADR (Carriage of Dangerous Goods) is highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

Minimum 12-24 months of commercial LGV 2 driving experience is typically required. However, newly qualified drivers with a demonstrable professional attitude and eagerness to learn may be considered for certain roles.

Preferred:

Demonstrable experience in a fast-paced, multi-drop distribution environment (e.g., pallet network, food service, builders' merchants, or parcel delivery). Experience with temperature-controlled, fragile, or high-value goods is a significant advantage.
