Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Oversee all daily circulation desk activities, including checking materials in and out, managing patron accounts, processing fines and fees, and issuing new library cards.
  • Provide exceptional direct public service by assisting patrons of all ages with locating materials, answering complex reference and directional questions, and providing reader's advisory.
  • Supervise, train, and schedule library assistants, pages, and/or volunteers to ensure consistent and high-quality service delivery and operational coverage.
  • Plan, promote, and execute a diverse range of library programs and events for various age groups, such as story times, technology workshops, author talks, and summer reading challenges.
  • Manage interlibrary loan (ILL) requests, from processing incoming patron requests to coordinating with other library systems for material lending and borrowing.
  • Participate in collection development activities, including suggesting new acquisitions, deselecting (weeding) outdated or damaged materials, and ensuring the collection remains relevant and vibrant.
  • Maintain the orderliness and accessibility of the library's physical collection by overseeing shelving, shelf-reading, and shifting projects.
  • Provide frontline technology support and digital literacy instruction to patrons, troubleshooting issues with public computers, printers, Wi-Fi, and e-resources like eBooks and databases.
  • Compile and analyze library usage statistics (e.g., circulation, program attendance, computer use) to generate regular reports for management and identify service trends.
  • Act as the person-in-charge in the absence of senior management, responsible for opening/closing the facility and handling any operational or patron issues that may arise.
  • Develop and implement engaging displays, exhibits, and promotional materials to highlight specific collections, services, and upcoming events.
  • Interpret and consistently enforce library policies and procedures with fairness and tact to ensure a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all patrons and staff.
  • Coordinate the processing of new library materials, including cataloging, stamping, and applying covers and labels to make them shelf-ready.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in managing the library's digital presence, including updating the website with event information and creating engaging content for social media platforms.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners, local schools, and organizations to promote library services and collaborate on outreach initiatives.
  • Coordinate the scheduling and use of library meeting rooms and public spaces by internal staff and external community groups.
  • Participate in departmental and library-wide meetings, contributing to strategic planning and the continuous improvement of services.
  • Assist with monitoring the department's budget, tracking expenditures, and managing the inventory of necessary operational supplies.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the library field through professional development, webinars, and literature.
  • Support grant application processes or fundraising campaigns by providing data, narratives, and logistical assistance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Integrated Library Systems (ILS): Proficiency with ILS/LMS software such as Sierra, Alma, Koha, or Polaris for circulation, cataloging, and patron management.
  • Microsoft Office & G-Suite: Advanced skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and their Google equivalents for creating reports, managing schedules, and developing presentations.
  • Database Searching: Competency in navigating and teaching patrons to use a variety of online databases (e.g., ProQuest, EBSCO, JSTOR).
  • Digital Resource Management: Experience with eBook/eAudiobook platforms like OverDrive/Libby and Hoopla.
  • Social Media & Marketing Tools: Familiarity with managing professional social media accounts and using basic design tools like Canva to create promotional materials.
  • Basic IT Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and resolve common issues with public computers, printers, scanners, and A/V equipment.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS), or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited program.
