Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and layout diagrams to accurately plan and execute the installation of lift systems, including shafts, machine rooms, and guide rails.
  • Perform the complete mechanical and electrical installation of new passenger, freight, and service elevators according to manufacturer specifications and relevant safety codes (e.g., ASME A17.1, EN 81).
  • Manage on-site logistics, including the safe unloading, storage, and movement of heavy and delicate lift components, such as controllers, motors, cabs, and counterweights.
  • Install and align guide rails with extreme precision using laser alignment tools to ensure smooth and safe travel of the elevator car and counterweight throughout the hoistway.
  • Assemble the elevator car structure, including the sling, platform, and interior panels, ensuring all components are securely fastened and meet exacting quality standards.
  • Mount and connect all major mechanical equipment in the machine room or hoistway, such as the hoisting machine, governor, and controller unit for both traction and hydraulic systems.
  • Execute the intricate wiring of all electrical components, including control panels, traveling cables, landing stations, and safety circuits, ensuring all connections are secure and correctly terminated.
  • Install and adjust door operators, door panels, and landing sills to ensure seamless, reliable, and safe door operation at each floor, meeting specified opening and closing times.
  • Perform pre-commissioning checks and static testing on all installed components to identify and rectify any potential mechanical or electrical issues before powering up the system.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, site supervisors, and other construction trades (e.g., electricians, builders) to coordinate installation activities and resolve on-site challenges.
  • Conduct a comprehensive series of dynamic tests on the newly installed lift, including speed tests, load tests, and safety gear drop tests, to ensure full compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults that may arise during the installation and commissioning phases, implementing effective and lasting solutions.
  • Complete all necessary installation documentation, test reports, and handover certificates accurately and submit them in a timely manner for project closure and client acceptance.
  • Provide on-site training and a detailed handover to the client or the designated maintenance team, explaining the lift's operation, features, and key safety procedures.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and site-specific health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments and using personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times to ensure a zero-harm work environment.
  • Manage and maintain all company-provided tools, equipment, and vehicles, ensuring they are in good working order, calibrated as required, and fit for purpose.
  • Read and understand lift traffic analysis reports to ensure the installed system's parameters are configured to meet the building's specific performance requirements.
  • Install and commission hydraulic lift systems, including the power unit, pistons, and associated pipework, ensuring a leak-free and efficient operation.
  • Fit and terminate complex traveling cables and hoist ropes, ensuring correct tensioning, length, and secure connection to the car and counterweight.
  • Perform final adjustments on the entire lift system, fine-tuning ride quality, floor leveling accuracy, and door speeds to deliver a premium user experience.
  • Liaise with third-party inspectors and regulatory bodies during final inspections to demonstrate compliance and secure the necessary operating permits.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the sales and estimation teams by providing technical input on installation complexity and timeframes for new project bids.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of installation processes and best practices by providing constructive feedback from the field.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentices and junior engineers, sharing knowledge and ensuring high standards of workmanship and safety.
  • Participate in post-installation reviews to discuss project successes, challenges, and lessons learned to inform and improve future projects.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint and Schematic Interpretation: High-level proficiency in reading and interpreting complex mechanical and electrical schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
  • Mechanical Assembly & Alignment: Expert knowledge of elevator mechanics, including guide rail alignment, roping systems, and the assembly of car and counterweight structures.
  • Electrical Installation & Fault-Finding: Strong electrical installation skills, including wiring of control panels (microprocessor and relay logic), safety circuits, and motor drives (VF drives).
  • Tool and Equipment Proficiency: Competence in using a wide range of hand and power tools, as well as specialized lifting and measuring equipment (e.g., laser levels, torque wrenches, multimeters).

  • Testing & Commissioning: Ability to perform comprehensive testing and commissioning procedures, including load testing, safety gear testing, and ride quality analysis using diagnostic tools.
  • System Versatility: Experience with various types of lift systems, including traction (Machine Room-Less and traditional), hydraulic, and bespoke installations.
  • Formal Qualification: NVQ Level 3 in Lift Installation/Engineering or equivalent certification (e.g., CET/CAT) or time-served experience is typically required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background
