Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems, including poles, towers, conductors, and associated equipment.
Perform the installation, framing, and setting of new utility poles, including wood, steel, and composite structures, ensuring proper alignment and depth according to engineering specifications.
Install and maintain transformers, capacitors, voltage regulators, switches, circuit breakers, and other protective devices.
String, splice, and sag new overhead conductors (wires) and communication cables, ensuring proper tension and clearance from obstacles.
Identify and repair faults in underground electrical primary and secondary cables, utilizing fault-finding equipment and performing cable splicing and termination.
Respond to emergency service calls and power outages, safely working in adverse weather conditions to troubleshoot systems, identify the cause of failure, and restore service promptly.
Operate specialized heavy equipment, including digger derricks, bucket trucks, trenchers, and cable pullers, while maintaining a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Perform "hot-stick" or "gloving" work on energized high-voltage lines, adhering to strict safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
Install and maintain street and highway lighting systems, including fixtures, wiring, and control mechanisms.
Climb utility poles and transmission towers using approved climbing gear and techniques to access work areas when bucket trucks are not feasible.
Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and staking sheets to ensure work is performed according to design and specifications.
Conduct regular inspections of lines, poles, and equipment to identify potential hazards, wear, or damage and proactively perform preventative maintenance.
Install, tension, and terminate guys and anchors to ensure the structural stability of poles and towers under various load conditions.
Perform pole top and bucket truck rescue procedures, demonstrating proficiency during regular drills and in emergency situations.
Frame poles on the ground and in the air according to utility standards and engineering work orders.
Install and test new residential and commercial electrical services, including setting meters and making final connections.
Work with telecommunication cables, including the installation, lashing, and splicing of fiber optic and coaxial lines on utility poles.
Manage worksite safety by setting up appropriate traffic control, barriers, and signage in accordance with MUTCD standards.
Ground and tag lines and equipment to establish a safe work zone (Equipotential Zone) before commencing any de-energized work.
Document and report system changes, equipment installations, and repair details accurately for system records.
Troubleshoot and repair issues in secondary voltage systems, tracing problems from the transformer to the customer's meter base.

Secondary Functions

Maintain accurate, timely records of work performed, materials used, and hours logged using mobile workforce management software or paper-based systems.
Conduct daily pre-trip inspections on vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in safe, operational condition, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
Participate actively in daily safety meetings, tailboard conferences, and job briefings to review hazards, discuss work procedures, and ensure crew alignment.
Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice-level technicians, sharing knowledge, reinforcing safe work practices, and providing constructive feedback.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Proficiency in climbing wood poles and steel structures using lineman's climbers and safety belts.
Operation of aerial lifts (bucket trucks) and digger derricks for construction and maintenance tasks.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and OSHA regulations for power transmission and distribution.
Skill in performing high-voltage live-line work using rubber gloving and hot-sticking techniques.
Competency in transformer banking, connections (Wye, Delta), and troubleshooting.
Experience with underground residential distribution (URD) systems, including cable splicing and termination.
Ability to read and interpret complex electrical diagrams, blueprints, and staking sheets.
Expertise in rigging techniques for lifting and setting heavy equipment like transformers and cross-arms.
Proficiency in performing pole-top and bucket truck rescue procedures.
Experience with the installation and splicing of fiber optic and other communication cables.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

Certificate or Associate's Degree from a recognized Power Lineman Training Program or Technical College.
Completion of a DOL-certified apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
