Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Greet customers warmly as they enter the store, offering assistance and creating a welcoming and friendly shopping atmosphere.
  • Engage with customers to understand their preferences and needs, providing tailored recommendations for wine, spirits, and beer for various occasions and food pairings.
  • Operate a Point of Sale (POS) system efficiently and accurately to process customer transactions, including cash, credit, debit, and gift card payments.
  • Maintain a deep and ever-growing knowledge of the store's product inventory, including new arrivals, special promotions, and key characteristics of different beverage categories.
  • Diligently verify customer identification to ensure they meet the legal age requirement for purchasing alcohol, strictly adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Handle customer inquiries, resolve complaints, and process returns or exchanges in a professional and courteous manner to ensure a positive resolution.
  • Execute sales strategies by actively up-selling and cross-selling complementary products, such as mixers, glassware, or promotional items.
  • Assist in receiving and unpacking merchandise shipments, verifying the accuracy of invoices and reporting any discrepancies or damages to management.
  • Stock shelves, coolers, and displays with new inventory in a timely and organized fashion, ensuring products are correctly priced and neatly presented.
  • Perform regular price checks and update shelf tags and promotional signage to ensure all pricing information is accurate and visible to customers.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the sales floor, checkout counters, and storage areas to create a safe and appealing environment for both customers and staff.
  • Monitor inventory levels on the sales floor and communicate restocking needs to the inventory manager or team lead to prevent out-of-stock situations.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in routine inventory counts and cycle counts to help maintain accurate stock records and identify potential shrinkage issues.
  • Build and maintain attractive and effective product displays and merchandising presentations to highlight new products, seasonal items, and special promotions.
  • Assist with order fulfillment for online, phone, or delivery orders, including picking, packing, and preparing items for customer pickup or shipment.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, new product releases, and changes in beverage laws to serve as a knowledgeable resource for customers and the team.
  • Provide support to other team members during peak business hours, assisting with checkout, stocking, or customer service as needed to ensure smooth store operations.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively with colleagues and management and participating in team meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform opening and closing duties as assigned, including balancing the cash register, securing the premises, and completing end-of-day reports.
  • Ensure the proper rotation of stock using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method to minimize spoilage and ensure product freshness, especially for beer and other dated items.
  • Handle special orders for customers, researching product availability, placing orders with suppliers, and communicating timelines to the customer.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Must meet the minimum legal age requirement to sell alcohol in the relevant state/jurisdiction.

Preferred Education:

  • Certifications in wine (e.g., WSET Level 1), spirits, or Cicerone (for beer).
  • Some college coursework or a certificate in Hospitality, Business, or Retail Management.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
