Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Proactively greet and engage customers upon entry, creating a welcoming and friendly shopping environment to foster customer loyalty and repeat business.
- Diligently verify customer identification to ensure strict compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations regarding the legal age for purchasing alcohol.
- Accurately and efficiently process customer transactions using a Point-of-Sale (POS) system, including cash, credit/debit cards, and mobile payments, while maintaining a balanced cash drawer.
- Provide personalized product recommendations to customers based on their preferences, occasion, or food pairings, demonstrating a growing knowledge of wine, spirits, and beer.
- Continuously develop and expand personal knowledge of different types of spirits, wine, and craft beer, including regions, tasting notes, and production methods to better assist customers.
- Receive, unload, and meticulously stock merchandise from deliveries, ensuring shelves, coolers, and displays are fully replenished and organized according to store planograms.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization throughout the store, including the sales floor, stockroom, and restrooms, to ensure a safe and pleasant shopping experience.
- Actively promote store specials, loyalty programs, and complementary items (e.g., mixers, glassware, garnishes) to enhance the customer's purchase and increase sales revenue.
- Creatively build and maintain eye-catching product displays for seasonal promotions, new arrivals, and high-margin items to drive sales and customer interest.
- Professionally answer customer phone calls, addressing inquiries about product availability, store hours, special orders, and current promotions with excellent phone etiquette.
- Implement a first-in, first-out (FIFO) stock rotation system to ensure product freshness and minimize spoilage, particularly for date-sensitive items like beer and wine.
- Assist with regular inventory counts, cycle counts, and stock level monitoring to help minimize shrinkage, prevent theft, and identify product ordering needs.
- Resolve customer issues and complaints with professionalism and empathy, escalating to management when necessary to ensure a satisfactory outcome and retain customer goodwill.
- Execute daily opening and closing procedures, which may include preparing cash registers, securing inventory, cleaning, and arming/disarming security systems.
- Maintain constant situational awareness to prevent theft and loss, reporting any suspicious activity to the store manager in accordance with company loss prevention policies.
Secondary Functions
- Manage the special order process for customers, accurately recording requests, communicating expected timelines, and promptly notifying customers upon item arrival.
- Assist in pricing merchandise and applying price labels or tags, ensuring accuracy and consistency with the store's current pricing strategy and promotions.
- Support the management team in verifying incoming shipments against purchase orders, diligently noting any discrepancies, damages, or shortages for claims processing.
- Organize and maintain the back stockroom, ensuring it is safe, orderly, and allows for the efficient retrieval of products for restocking the sales floor.
- Educate customers on the differences between various product categories, such as bourbon vs. rye whiskey or different styles of IPAs, to help them make informed purchasing decisions.
- Operate and manage lottery ticket sales and redemptions in compliance with state lottery regulations, if applicable to the store's offerings.
- Adhere to all health and safety protocols, including proper lifting techniques for heavy cases, responding to emergencies, and managing cash handling safely.
