Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage a significant and varied caseload independently, overseeing all litigation phases from initial case assessment and investigation through to trial, appeal, or settlement.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive litigation strategies, including a thorough analysis of legal claims and defenses, risk assessment, and budget management to align with client objectives.
  • Draft, review, and file a wide array of complex legal documents, including pleadings, discovery requests and responses, dispositive motions, summary judgments, and appellate briefs.
  • Conduct and defend depositions of fact witnesses, corporate representatives, and expert witnesses, demonstrating a mastery of questioning techniques and case-theme integration.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings, including motion hearings, pre-trial conferences, and evidentiary hearings, presenting persuasive oral arguments.
  • Lead all aspects of trial preparation, including developing trial themes, preparing witness examinations, managing exhibit lists, and drafting motions in limine and jury instructions.
  • Conduct extensive and sophisticated legal research on complex procedural and substantive issues using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other legal research tools.
  • Manage all facets of the discovery process, including the supervision of large-scale document reviews, e-discovery protocols, and resolving discovery disputes.
  • Counsel and advise clients directly on case status, strategic decisions, potential risks, and settlement opportunities, ensuring clear and consistent communication.
  • Negotiate and structure settlements on behalf of clients, participating in mediations, arbitrations, and informal settlement conferences to achieve favorable resolutions.
  • Collaborate with and manage expert witnesses, including sourcing, vetting, and preparing them for depositions and trial testimony.
  • Second-chair or, where appropriate, first-chair trials, arbitrations, and other evidentiary hearings in state and federal courts.

Secondary Functions

  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior associates and paralegals, providing guidance on case management, legal writing, and professional development.
  • Participate in business development initiatives, including networking, writing articles, and presenting at seminars to contribute to the firm's growth.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous time-keeping and billing records in accordance with firm policies and client guidelines.
  • Stay current on legal trends, recent court decisions, and changes in procedural rules that could impact client matters and litigation strategy.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
  • Active bar admission and in good standing in the relevant jurisdiction(s).

Preferred Education:

  • Graduation from a top-tier (T14) law school.
  • Participation in Law Review, Moot Court, or Mock Trial.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10 years of post-J.D. experience focused specifically on civil or commercial litigation at a reputable law firm.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a large or mid-sized law firm (AmLaw 200) environment.
  • Federal or state judicial clerkship.
  • First-chair or significant second-chair trial or arbitration experience.
  • Demonstrable experience managing cases with minimal partner supervision.
