Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Manage the entire discovery process from start to finish, including the strategic drafting of interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admission, while also preparing thorough and accurate responses and objections.
  • Organize and maintain complex case files and document collections, both in physical and electronic formats, ensuring all materials are properly indexed, accessible, and up-to-date.
  • Conduct comprehensive legal and factual research using online databases like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and Pacer to locate and analyze case law, statutes, public records, and other critical information.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing for depositions, hearings, and trials by organizing exhibits, preparing witness binders, coordinating witness schedules, and managing trial notebooks.
  • Draft a wide array of legal documents under attorney supervision, including but not limited to pleadings, motions, discovery requests, subpoenas, settlement agreements, and routine correspondence.
  • Coordinate large-scale document reviews and productions, often utilizing e-discovery platforms to manage the collection, review, redaction, and bates-stamping of electronically stored information (ESI).
  • Summarize and analyze extensive deposition transcripts, medical records, and other case-related documents to identify key facts, inconsistencies, and strategic points for attorneys.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for clients, opposing counsel, court clerks, and vendors, managing communications professionally and efficiently to facilitate case progress.
  • Maintain and manage the case calendar, meticulously tracking all deadlines for filings, discovery, court appearances, and other critical events to ensure compliance with procedural rules.
  • Prepare and issue subpoenas for records and witness testimony, and diligently follow up to ensure timely compliance and receipt of materials.
  • Cite-check, proofread, and format legal briefs, motions, and other court filings, ensuring adherence to specific court rules (e.g., Bluebook, California Style Manual) and procedural requirements.
  • Assist in the jury selection process by conducting research on potential jurors, preparing voir dire questions, and tracking peremptory and for-cause challenges.
  • Manage and organize trial exhibits, maintaining a detailed exhibit list and coordinating the presentation of evidence in the courtroom, including the use of trial presentation software.
  • Investigate the facts of a new case by gathering and analyzing information from various sources, including client interviews, public records, and witness statements.
  • Coordinate with expert witnesses, including managing their retention, gathering necessary case materials for their review, and tracking their work and deadlines.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare and file documents with federal, state, and local courts, both electronically (e-discovery) and through traditional means, ensuring all filings meet court-specific requirements.
  • Assist with client billing by tracking and entering billable hours into timekeeping software, ensuring detailed and accurate records of work performed.
  • Support attorneys in post-trial activities, including the preparation of appellate records, motions for a new trial, and cost bills.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of internal team processes and templates to enhance efficiency and maintain high standards of quality.
  • Keep abreast of changes in procedural rules, court-specific local rules, and developments in litigation technology and best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in legal research platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, and PACER.
  • Expertise in using e-discovery and litigation support software (e.g., Relativity, Concordance, Disco, Everlaw) for document review, management, and production.
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state court rules of civil procedure, evidence, and local court rules.
  • High level of skill with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and case management software (e.g., Clio, ProLaw, FileVine).
  • Competence with trial presentation software (e.g., TrialDirector, Sanction) for managing and displaying exhibits in a courtroom setting.
  • Experience with Bluebooking and cite-checking legal briefs and memoranda for accuracy and proper formatting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • An Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies or a related field, OR a Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program.

Preferred Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
