Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Methodically unload inbound shipments from trucks, trailers, and sea containers, carefully handling products to prevent damage and ensure an orderly receiving process.
- Verify the accuracy of incoming freight by comparing items and quantities against bills of lading, purchase orders, and shipping manifests, noting any discrepancies or damage.
- Efficiently and safely load outbound trucks and trailers, applying knowledge of proper weight distribution, stacking techniques, and load balancing to ensure cargo stability.
- Operate manual and powered material handling equipment (MHE) such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies to move goods to and from the loading dock and within the warehouse.
- Break down and palletize incoming shipments, wrapping and securing pallets to meet company standards for storage and internal movement.
- Sort and stage products and materials in designated areas of the warehouse or loading dock according to destination, order number, or product type.
- Meticulously inspect trailers and containers for cleanliness, structural integrity, and any potential hazards before commencing loading or unloading activities.
- Securely fasten cargo in place using straps, braces, dunnage, and other securing devices to prevent shifting and damage during transit.
- Utilize Radio Frequency (RF) scanning equipment to accurately track the movement of inventory as it is received or dispatched, ensuring system-wide data integrity.
- Maintain constant communication and coordination with truck drivers, providing clear instructions and working together to ensure a safe and efficient turnaround.
- Adhere strictly to all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and company-specific safety policies, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Perform manual handling and lifting of packages, boxes, and materials of various weights and sizes, employing proper lifting techniques to prevent injury.
- Immediately report any damaged goods, equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, or inventory discrepancies to the warehouse supervisor or lead.
- Keep the loading dock and surrounding work areas clean, organized, and free of debris to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Document loading and unloading activities by completing logs, checklists, and other required paperwork accurately and legibly.
- Assist in directing truck traffic within the yard and at the dock doors to maintain an orderly flow of inbound and outbound transportation.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with periodic physical inventory counts and cycle counts to support the inventory control team in maintaining accurate stock levels.
- Contribute to the general upkeep of the warehouse by performing basic housekeeping duties such as sweeping, organizing materials, and disposing of waste.
- Collaborate with other warehouse teams, including pickers and packers, to ensure a smooth hand-off of products and resolve any workflow bottlenecks.
- Participate actively in daily pre-shift meetings, safety briefings, and ongoing training programs to stay current on procedures and best practices.
- Support the training and onboarding of new team members by demonstrating proper techniques for handling freight and operating equipment safely.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Physical Stamina & Strength: Ability to consistently lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects (often 50 lbs or more) and remain on your feet for extended periods.
- Material Handling Equipment (MHE) Operation: Proficiency in using manual pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies. Experience with powered equipment is a major plus.
- Spatial Awareness & Load Planning: The skill to visualize and execute the proper stacking and arrangement of freight to maximize space and ensure load stability.
- RF Scanner Proficiency: Experience using handheld scanning devices to track inventory and process shipments.
- Safety Protocol Adherence: Deep understanding of safe lifting techniques, proper use of PPE, and general warehouse safety awareness (e.g., dock safety, vehicle awareness).

Typical Experience Range:
