Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior locksmiths in the professional installation, service, and repair of mechanical and electronic locking hardware for residential and commercial clients.
- Learn to accurately duplicate a wide variety of keys, including standard residential, commercial, and high-security keys, using precision key-cutting machines.
- Participate in and learn the techniques for providing emergency lockout services for homes, businesses, and vehicles under the direct supervision of a certified locksmith.
- Gain hands-on proficiency in re-keying residential and commercial locks, ensuring old keys no longer operate and providing clients with new, secure keys.
- Observe and contribute to the planning and installation of master key systems, understanding the principles of tiered access for commercial properties.
- Develop diagnostic skills to troubleshoot malfunctioning locks, deadbolts, and panic hardware, performing necessary repairs or recommending appropriate replacements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and fully-stocked work vehicle, ensuring all tools, parts, and equipment are accounted for and ready for service calls.
- Become proficient in the use of specialized locksmith tools, including lock pick sets, tension wrenches, key extractors, and diagnostic equipment.
- Assist with the installation and basic servicing of electronic access control systems, including keypads, card readers, and magnetic locks, under expert guidance.
- Provide exceptional customer service by actively listening to client needs, clearly explaining procedures, and professionally answering questions about their security.
- Accurately and legibly complete all required paperwork for each job, including work orders, invoices, and service reports, using mobile software or paper forms.
- Strictly adhere to all company safety protocols and industry best practices to ensure a safe work environment for yourself, colleagues, and customers.
- Learn to identify a vast array of key blanks, lock types, and hardware finishes to select the correct materials for each specific job.
- Assist in the careful disassembly, analysis, and reassembly of complex lock mechanisms to understand their function and perform internal repairs.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule under supervision to respond to after-hours emergency calls, gaining valuable real-world experience.
- Study and learn to cut and program automotive transponder keys and smart key fobs for a variety of vehicle makes and models.
- Shadow senior technicians during on-site security assessments and sales consultations to learn how to recommend effective security solutions.
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times, acting as a trustworthy and reliable representative of the company.
- Assist with basic door and frame adjustments and repairs (e.g., strike plate alignment, hinge adjustments) to ensure proper lock functionality.
- Support in-shop duties as needed, including assisting walk-in customers, managing inventory, and maintaining a clean and orderly workshop.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records for parts, key blanks, and equipment on service vehicles and in the shop.
- Proactively seek opportunities to learn new techniques and stay informed about emerging security products and technologies.
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers and service managers, providing clear updates on job status, travel times, and any on-site challenges.
- Participate actively in regular team meetings and scheduled training sessions to enhance technical skills and product knowledge.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity with a proven ability to work proficiently with hand and power tools.
- A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are essential for operating a company service vehicle.
- Ability to learn the operation of key cutting machines, code machines, and other specialized locksmithing equipment.
- Basic understanding of mathematics for measurements and calculations related to hardware installation.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in various positions (kneeling, bending, overhead).
- Capacity to learn and apply knowledge from technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and installation guides.
