Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively monitor all closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and floor activity to identify suspicious behaviors, potential safety hazards, and instances of internal or external theft.
  • Conduct routine and unannounced internal and external surveillance to detect and apprehend individuals engaged in theft, fraud, or other policy violations, in strict accordance with company guidelines.
  • Perform comprehensive floor-walks and physical security checks of the premises, including all entry/exit points, emergency doors, and high-value merchandise areas, to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Act as a visible deterrent to theft and other illicit activities by maintaining a professional and alert presence throughout the assigned location.
  • Respond to and manage Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) and other alarm system activations, investigating the cause and documenting findings in accordance with established incident reporting procedures.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all incidents, apprehensions, and investigations, ensuring all documentation is completed professionally and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Partner with store management to develop and implement store-specific shortage reduction plans and awareness programs, providing regular updates on progress and key metrics.
  • Assist in the execution of internal investigations, including gathering evidence, conducting informational interviews, and collaborating with Human Resources and senior LP staff.
  • Conduct operational and safety audits to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures related to cash handling, inventory management, and physical security.
  • Professionally interact with law enforcement and judicial authorities, including providing testimony in court proceedings when required for cases you were directly involved in.
  • Greet and provide friendly customer service to shoppers as a means of deterring potential theft while positively representing the brand.
  • Train and educate store associates on loss prevention best practices, shortage awareness, and emergency response protocols.
  • Review and analyze exception-based reporting to identify unusual transactions, potential internal dishonesty, or procedural breakdowns at the point-of-sale.
  • Manage and maintain the integrity of all physical security equipment, including CCTV cameras, alarm systems, and EAS tags, reporting any malfunctions for prompt repair.
  • Participate in the store's inventory preparation and execution process, helping to ensure accuracy and identify sources of variance.
  • Safely and effectively de-escalate potentially volatile situations involving dishonest individuals or disruptive customers, prioritizing the safety of all parties.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to shrink trends, incident patterns, and audit results.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader asset protection strategy by providing feedback and ground-level insights from the field.
  • Collaborate with district and regional leadership to translate data needs and identified risks into actionable prevention strategies.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions to stay current on loss prevention techniques, company policies, and industry trends.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CCTV & Surveillance Systems Operation: Proficiency in operating and reviewing footage from modern digital video surveillance systems.
  • Incident Report Writing: Ability to write clear, concise, and legally defensible reports detailing observations and actions taken.
  • Knowledge of Security Systems: Familiarity with Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) towers, security tags, and burglar alarm panels.
  • Interviewing Techniques: Foundational understanding of non-confrontational interview methods for gathering information (e.g., Wicklander-Zulawski is a plus).
  • Basic Legal Knowledge: Understanding of local and state laws pertaining to shoplifting, citizen's arrest, and the use of force.
  • Exception Reporting Analysis: Ability to review point-of-sale (POS) data to identify fraudulent or suspicious transaction patterns.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of relevant experience.

Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of prior experience in a retail, security, or loss prevention environment is highly desirable. Experience as a key holder or in a high-theft retail setting is a significant advantage.
