Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct the complete operational and financial performance of the lumber and building materials department, assuming full ownership of sales goals, margin performance, and expense control.
  • Foster a culture of safety by meticulously implementing and enforcing all company policies and OSHA regulations, conducting regular safety audits, and leading daily team huddles on safe work practices.
  • Drive departmental sales and profitability by developing and executing strategic merchandising plans, managing pricing integrity, and capitalizing on commercial and special-order sales opportunities.
  • Lead all aspects of talent management, including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and providing continuous training and coaching to build a team of knowledgeable and customer-focused associates.
  • Manage the full inventory lifecycle, from demand forecasting and strategic ordering to overseeing receiving, ensuring accurate stock levels, and executing cycle counts to minimize shrinkage.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong, lasting relationships with professional clients, including contractors and builders, by understanding their needs, providing expert advice, and ensuring a seamless and reliable supply chain for their projects.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for resolving complex customer issues, providing solutions, and empowering the team to deliver a superior service experience that builds loyalty and repeat business.
  • Ensure the lumber yard and associated sales floor are maintained to the highest standards of organization, cleanliness, and accessibility for both customers and team members.
  • Oversee the efficient flow of goods, including supervising the safe loading and unloading of freight, managing delivery logistics, and ensuring order accuracy for customer pick-ups and job-site drop-offs.
  • Analyze sales data, inventory turn rates, and market trends to identify opportunities for growth, adjust product assortment, and make informed business decisions to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations for department associates, setting clear expectations, providing constructive feedback, and developing career paths to foster employee engagement and retention.
  • Guarantee the operational readiness and safety of all department equipment, including forklifts, saws, and delivery vehicles, by coordinating regular maintenance and certification checks.
  • Plan and manage associate scheduling to ensure optimal floor coverage that aligns with customer traffic patterns and business needs, while effectively controlling labor costs.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for all lumber and building material products, providing guidance to customers and training for associates on wood species, grades, treatments, and applications.
  • Collaborate with store leadership and other department managers to execute store-wide initiatives, promotions, and ensure a cohesive customer experience across the entire facility.
  • Manage vendor relationships at the store level, communicating about product quality, availability, and coordinating promotional support or training events.
  • Champion the credit and loyalty programs of the company, training the team on their benefits and driving sign-ups, particularly within the professional customer base.
  • Lead the team in executing project-oriented selling, assisting customers with material take-offs, and quoting for small to medium-sized construction projects.
  • Uphold merchandising standards by ensuring all products are properly signed, priced, and displayed in a way that is both visually appealing and easy for customers to shop.
  • Take a lead role during peak business hours, actively engaging with customers on the sales floor and in the yard to model exemplary service and support the team.

Secondary Functions

  • Analyze sales data and inventory reports to address ad-hoc queries and provide business insights to senior management and corporate partners.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and input toward the continuous improvement of inventory management systems and sales tracking technology.
  • Collaborate with business units, such as Pro Sales and Installed Sales, to translate customer project needs into accurate material and engineering requirements.
  • Participate actively in store leadership meetings, sprint planning, and agile ceremonies related to store-wide operational and sales initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Product Knowledge: Deep understanding of wood species, lumber grading, pressure-treated variants, engineered wood, and associated building materials.
  • Inventory Management: Proficiency with inventory control software, cycle counting procedures, and shrinkage-reduction strategies.
  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems: Competence in operating POS systems for complex transactions, special orders, and returns.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Certified or able to be certified in operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and other machinery common to a lumber yard.
  • Business Acumen: Strong ability to read and interpret financial reports, including P&L statements, and manage a departmental budget.
  • Sales & Quoting: Skill in creating material estimates, job quotes, and performing material take-offs from blueprints or project plans.
  • Safety Compliance: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and best practices for a retail/yard environment.
  • Merchandising: Understanding of visual merchandising principles to create effective and shoppable product displays.
