Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of industrial machinery, including motors, pumps, conveyors, robotic systems, and automated packaging equipment, to resolve electrical, electronic, and control-related malfunctions.
  • Perform routine and complex preventative maintenance (PM) on all facility electrical systems, including switchgear, transformers, distribution panels, and motor control centers (MCCs), to ensure operational reliability and safety.
  • Read, interpret, and work from complex electrical schematics, blueprints, P&IDs, and technical manuals to identify issues, plan repairs, and execute installations.
  • Install, test, and commission new machinery and equipment, including running conduit, pulling wire, and terminating connections according to National Electrical Code (NEC) and company standards.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), primarily Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and Siemens platforms, by diagnosing I/O issues, tracing ladder logic, and replacing faulty components.
  • Install, program, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), servo motors, and DC drives to ensure precise control of equipment speed and performance.
  • Perform electrical safety inspections and system testing, utilizing multimeters, megohmmeters, clamp-on ammeters, and other diagnostic tools to ensure systems are operating within specified parameters.
  • Respond promptly to emergency breakdowns and production-down situations, applying systematic troubleshooting techniques to minimize downtime and restore operations safely.
  • Maintain and repair building systems, including lighting, HVAC electrical components, and emergency power systems like generators and UPS units.
  • Work with voltages ranging from low voltage controls (24VDC) up to 480V 3-phase power, always adhering to strict lockout/tagout (LOTO) and arc flash (NFPA 70E) safety procedures.
  • Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to maintain accurate records and support maintenance planning.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement in electrical systems and maintenance processes to enhance equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Calibrate and maintain electronic instrumentation and control devices that measure variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow.
  • Modify and update electrical control panels and systems as part of equipment upgrades or process changes, ensuring all modifications are documented and safe.
  • Assist in developing and refining the electrical preventative maintenance program for the facility.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist mechanical and other maintenance team members with projects and repairs, fostering a collaborative and cross-functional team environment.
  • Manage inventory of critical electrical spare parts, ordering components as needed to ensure availability for planned and unplanned maintenance.
  • Provide technical guidance and informal training to machine operators and junior maintenance personnel on basic electrical troubleshooting and safety.
  • Participate actively in plant safety committees and initiatives, conducting safety audits and promoting a culture of safety excellence.
  • Support engineering teams in the planning and execution of capital projects by providing practical input on electrical design and installation requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • PLC Troubleshooting: Strong ability to connect to, troubleshoot, and diagnose issues in PLC-controlled systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), including identifying faulty I/O cards and tracing ladder logic.
  • VFD & Motor Control: Proficiency in installing, programming, and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), soft starts, and complex motor control circuits.
  • Schematic & Blueprint Reading: The ability to read, interpret, and redline complex electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and diagrams.
  • NEC & Safety Code Knowledge: Deep understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace), and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Electrical Installation: Skilled in bending and installing various types of conduit (EMT, Rigid), pulling and terminating wires, and properly sizing conductors and overcurrent protection.
  • Hands-On Troubleshooting: Expertise in using diagnostic tools like multimeters, oscilloscopes, megohmmeters, and thermal imagers to methodically diagnose and solve electrical problems.
  • Industrial Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with 3-phase power (up to 480V), transformers, switchgear, and various sensor types (photoelectric, proximity, etc.).
  • CMMS Proficiency: Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, Fiix) to log work orders, track time, and manage parts.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a state-certified Electrical Apprenticeship program OR a diploma/degree from a vocational or technical college in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Electrical Technology, Electromechanical Technology, or Industrial Maintenance.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience in a 24/7 continuous operation facility (e.g., food & beverage, automotive, pharmaceuticals, logistics).
