Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, oversee, and evaluate the daily workflow and responsibilities of the maintenance department, ensuring effective delegation and follow-up.
  • Develop, schedule, and implement comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Champion and enforce all safety policies and procedures (including LOTO, confined space, and hot work), ensuring the team operates with a safety-first mindset.
  • Provide hands-on support and expert technical guidance to technicians for complex troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Manage work order assignments, backlog, and scheduling through a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), ensuring data accuracy and timely completion.
  • Lead the team’s response to emergency breakdowns and unscheduled equipment failures, making critical decisions to restore operations swiftly and safely.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop maintenance technicians, identifying training needs and creating opportunities for skill enhancement and career growth.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and handle employee relations issues within the maintenance team.
  • Plan and coordinate maintenance activities with production schedules to minimize downtime and disruption to operations.
  • Analyze equipment performance data and maintenance history to identify recurring issues and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Manage the procurement of necessary parts, supplies, and tools, while maintaining an optimized and organized spare parts inventory.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams on capital projects, equipment installations, and facility modifications.
  • Prepare and manage the departmental budget for labor, materials, and outside contractors, actively seeking cost-saving opportunities.
  • Ensure all maintenance work and facility conditions comply with regulatory standards, including OSHA, EPA, and other relevant codes.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for significant equipment failures to prevent future occurrences.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives (like 5S, Kaizen, or TPM) within the maintenance department to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of third-party contractors and vendors, ensuring they meet safety, quality, and scope requirements.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for key maintenance tasks and processes.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate departmental goals, safety alerts, and company updates.
  • Generate and present reports on key maintenance metrics, such as MTTR (Mean Time to Repair), MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), and PM compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the facility's environmental compliance programs by ensuring proper handling and disposal of maintenance-related waste.
  • Participate in the hiring and onboarding process for new maintenance technicians.
  • Assist in developing long-term asset management and capital replacement strategies.
  • Serve as a key member of the plant's safety committee, providing technical insight and promoting safety initiatives.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CMMS Proficiency: Deep experience using and managing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, Fiix, UpKeep).
  • Industrial Systems Expertise: Strong hands-on knowledge of electrical systems (480V, VFDs), mechanical systems (gearboxes, conveyors), PLCs (troubleshooting), hydraulics, and pneumatics.
  • Preventative/Predictive Maintenance: Proven ability to develop, implement, and optimize PM and PdM programs (including techniques like vibration analysis, thermal imaging, etc.).
  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Skilled in using methodologies like 5 Whys or Fishbone Diagrams to diagnose and solve complex equipment failures.
  • Safety Regulations: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards, LOTO procedures, and other relevant safety regulations in an industrial setting.
  • Budget Management: Experience in tracking departmental spending, contributing to budget creation, and managing costs for parts and labor.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, coupled with significant technical training or certifications (e.g., certified maintenance technician, journeyman status).

Preferred Education:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 5-8 years of hands-on experience in industrial maintenance, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership, lead technician, or supervisory capacity.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a high-speed manufacturing, distribution, or 24/7 production environment is highly desirable.
