Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze scripts, character descriptions, and directorial notes to conceptualize and design makeup looks that define character, period, and story.
  • Collaborate extensively with directors, costume designers, and hair stylists in pre-production to ensure a unified and cohesive visual narrative.
  • Create detailed makeup design plans, or "makeup plots," including sketches, mood boards, and reference photos for all principal and background performers.
  • Execute a wide range of makeup applications, from natural and corrective beauty makeup to high-fashion, fantasy, and period-specific styles.
  • Skillfully design, create, and apply prosthetic pieces, including sculpting, molding, casting, and painting to create realistic or fantastical effects.
  • Apply complex special effects makeup, such as wounds, burns, scars, aging, and creature effects, using materials like silicone, latex, and gelatin.
  • Maintain meticulous continuity of makeup for all characters across shooting days or performances, often documented with detailed notes and photographs.
  • Manage and supervise a team of makeup artists and assistants, delegating tasks, providing guidance, and ensuring high standards of artistry and professionalism.
  • Conduct makeup tests and camera tests with performers and the cinematography department to finalize looks and ensure they translate effectively on screen or stage.
  • Communicate effectively with actors to understand their skin needs, allergies, and comfort levels, fostering a trusting and professional relationship.
  • Safely and efficiently remove complex makeup and prosthetics at the end of the day, providing performers with appropriate skin care guidance.
  • Troubleshoot and make rapid adjustments to makeup on set or backstage in response to lighting changes, environmental conditions, or directorial feedback.
  • Research historical periods, cultural aesthetics, and artistic movements to ensure authenticity and accuracy in period-specific makeup designs.
  • Design and apply temporary tattoos, body paint, and other forms of body art as required by the script or creative vision.
  • Work closely with the lighting and cinematography departments to understand how different lighting setups will affect the appearance of the makeup.
  • Provide on-set touch-ups for performers between takes to ensure a flawless and consistent appearance throughout filming.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive "makeup bible" for the production, documenting all products, techniques, and continuity photos for every character.

  • Support the production by managing the departmental budget, including the strategic sourcing and procurement of all necessary supplies and specialty materials.
  • Contribute to the production's operational efficiency by preparing and managing departmental schedules, call sheets, and daily progress reports.
  • Oversee the proper care, storage, and maintenance of custom-made prosthetics, wigs, and facial hair pieces throughout the duration of a production.
  • Participate in industry workshops, trade shows, and training to stay at the forefront of new technologies, products, and techniques, bringing innovation back to the team.

Education & Experience
