Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform high-quality screening and diagnostic mammographic procedures in strict accordance with ACR, MQSA, and departmental protocols.
Accurately position patients for all required mammography views, utilizing appropriate compression and immobilization techniques to ensure optimal image quality while minimizing patient discomfort.
Critically evaluate mammographic images for technical quality, proper positioning, and anatomical accuracy before submitting them for radiologist interpretation.
Operate and maintain digital mammography and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D) equipment, ensuring all functions are performing correctly.
Explain procedures clearly to patients, answer their questions, and provide emotional support to alleviate anxiety and ensure their full cooperation during the exam.
Obtain and document a thorough patient medical history, including prior surgeries, family history, and any current breast concerns, to provide context for the radiologist.
Adhere to all radiation safety protocols and ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles to protect patients, colleagues, and oneself from unnecessary exposure.
Assist radiologists during invasive, image-guided procedures such as stereotactic biopsies, needle localizations, and galactograms.
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times, strictly adhering to HIPAA regulations and organizational privacy policies.
Utilize Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS) for image management, scheduling, and patient record-keeping.
Review patient orders and electronic medical records to verify the appropriateness of the requested exam and ensure all necessary information is available.
Skillfully manage challenging patient situations, including those with physical limitations, high anxiety, or communication barriers, adapting techniques as necessary.
Perform bone densitometry (DEXA) scans as required by the department, demonstrating proficiency in patient positioning and scan acquisition.
Communicate effectively with radiologists, referring physicians, and other members of the healthcare team regarding patient status, image quality, and procedural findings.

Secondary Functions

Perform and document all required daily, weekly, and monthly quality control (QC) tests on mammography units and processing equipment to ensure MQSA compliance.
Troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions and coordinate with service engineers for necessary repairs and preventative maintenance.
Maintain adequate inventory of supplies for the mammography suite, including biopsy kits, patient gowns, and administrative materials.
Participate actively in departmental quality assurance and continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
