Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and manage all day-to-day operations of the grocery, dairy, and frozen departments to achieve sales, margin, and labor targets.
  • Develop and execute strategic merchandising plans, including promotional displays and seasonal sets, to drive sales and create an engaging customer experience.
  • Maintain full accountability for the department's P&L, meticulously analyzing financial reports to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a diverse team of associates, fostering a positive and productive work environment through effective training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Implement and oversee a rigorous inventory control system, including accurate ordering, receiving, and stocking procedures to optimize in-stock position and minimize shrink.
  • Champion a customer-first culture, empowering the team to proactively assist shoppers, resolve issues promptly, and build lasting loyalty.
  • Ensure unwavering compliance with all food safety regulations, sanitation standards, and company policies, maintaining a safe and healthy environment for both customers and staff.
  • Cultivate and manage strong relationships with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products and to negotiate favorable terms.
  • Analyze sales data, market trends, and customer buying patterns to make informed decisions about product assortment, pricing, and promotional activities.
  • Manage departmental labor and scheduling to align with customer traffic patterns and budgetary constraints, maximizing productivity and service levels.
  • Oversee the entire product lifecycle within the department, from ordering and receiving to stocking, rotating (FIFO), and managing unsaleable items.
  • Execute all corporate and regional marketing and merchandising programs with precision, ensuring brand consistency and promotional effectiveness.
  • Conduct regular department walks and audits to assess store conditions, product presentation, and team performance, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Control departmental expenses, including supplies and utilities, by implementing cost-saving measures without compromising quality or service.
  • Train new and existing team members on all aspects of their roles, including product knowledge, customer service standards, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Forecast sales and product needs to ensure optimal inventory levels, especially during peak seasons, holidays, and promotional events.
  • Serve as a key member of the store leadership team, collaborating with other department managers to drive overall store success and operational cohesion.
  • Resolve complex customer complaints and employee relations issues with professionalism and sound judgment, escalating to the Store Manager when necessary.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve the overall shopping experience.
  • Ensure all department equipment is properly maintained and in good working order, coordinating repairs and replacements as required.
  • Uphold and enforce all loss prevention policies and procedures to protect company assets and minimize financial losses due to theft or damage.
  • Communicate departmental goals, company updates, and performance feedback clearly and consistently to the entire grocery team through regular meetings and one-on-one coaching.

Secondary Functions

  • Support store-wide initiatives and programs, including community outreach events and holiday campaigns.
  • Act as Manager on Duty on a rotating basis, overseeing total store operations in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • Assist in adjacent departments during periods of high customer traffic or staff shortages to ensure seamless store operations.
  • Conduct regular competitive analysis, including price checks and assortment reviews of local competitors, to inform strategic decisions.

Education & Experience
