Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, lay out, and execute the installation of complex electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures based on job specifications, technical drawings, and local codes.
  • Diagnose and resolve malfunctions in intricate electrical systems, apparatus, and components, utilizing advanced testing equipment and diagnostic techniques to restore functionality.
  • Direct, train, and mentor journeyman electricians and apprentices, ensuring proper installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Read, interpret, and work from highly technical diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics to understand and implement system layouts and wiring configurations.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of electrical systems, components, and equipment to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, ensuring full compliance with NEC and other regulations.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and competitive bids for electrical projects, accurately calculating materials, labor, and overhead to ensure project profitability.
  • Manage and lead electrical projects from initial concept through to final commissioning, ensuring projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the client's satisfaction.
  • Obtain all necessary permits and licenses for electrical work and coordinate with inspectors to ensure all required inspections are scheduled, performed, and successfully passed.
  • Install, commission, and service sophisticated electrical equipment, including switchgears, motor control centers (MCCs), transformers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Implement and manage comprehensive preventative maintenance programs for all electrical equipment and systems to maximize reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Respond to high-priority and emergency service calls, performing urgent repairs in a timely and efficient manner to restore power and ensure operational safety.
  • Guarantee all work performed strictly adheres to the National Electrical Code (NEC), as well as state, and local building regulations, staying current with all code updates.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and installations, including detailed logs of parts used, labor hours, and system test results.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, general contractors, and project managers, coordinating work schedules and providing clear, professional communication on project status.
  • Oversee the procurement and inventory management of electrical parts, supplies, and tools, ensuring the team is well-equipped for all scheduled and emergency work.
  • Utilize and maintain a wide array of power tools, hand tools, and specialized testing equipment, such as meggers, power quality analyzers, and thermal imagers.
  • Lead job site safety initiatives, conduct regular safety meetings (toolbox talks), and enforce all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), to foster a zero-accident work environment.
  • Design and propose energy-efficient solutions and system upgrades, such as LED lighting retrofits, power factor correction, and building automation controls.
  • Perform final testing and commissioning of new electrical installations, verifying complete functionality, safety, and performance before project handover.
  • Troubleshoot and repair integrated systems, including fire alarm, security, and building automation systems, ensuring seamless operation between them.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc project requests and provide expert consultation for system assessments and upgrades.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the organization's electrical standards, safety protocols, and best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with other trades, such as HVAC, plumbing, and structural teams, to ensure integrated and conflict-free installations.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • National Electrical Code (NEC) Mastery: Deep, expert-level knowledge of the current NEC and local amendments.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and understand complex electrical, architectural, and mechanical drawings.
  • Advanced Electrical Diagnostics: Proficiency in troubleshooting complex circuits, control systems, and equipment failures.
  • Control Systems & PLCs: Experience with installing and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers and other control systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid State-Issued Master Electrician License.
  • Completion of a registered DOL Electrical Apprenticeship program or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology or Construction Management.
  • OSHA 30 Certification.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 8-12+ years of progressive experience in the electrical trade, including at least 3-5 years as a licensed Journeyman Electrician.
