Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform expert-level diagnostics and troubleshooting on the most complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems using advanced diagnostic equipment and schematic diagrams.
  • Execute major repairs and complete overhauls of critical components, including engines, transmissions, differentials, hybrid/EV powertrains, and advanced electronic control modules.
  • Serve as the final point of escalation for unresolved technical issues, providing definitive solutions for comebacks and difficult-to-diagnose problems.
  • Interpret complex technical service bulletins (TSBs), wiring diagrams, and manufacturer repair procedures to guide repairs on new or challenging vehicle/equipment models.
  • Act as a primary mentor and coach for Apprentice, C-Level, and B-Level technicians, providing on-the-job training, guidance, and support.
  • Conduct quality control checks and final verification on work performed by other technicians to ensure it meets safety, quality, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Communicate complex technical diagnoses, repair plans, and a clear breakdown of necessary work to service advisors and customers in an understandable and professional manner.
  • Maintain meticulous and detailed records of all diagnostic steps, repairs performed, parts used, and labor time within the shop's management software.
  • Test-drive vehicles or operate equipment before and after repairs to verify customer complaints and confirm that all issues have been resolved.
  • Stay current with all emerging automotive/equipment technologies, diagnostic techniques, and industry best practices by completing ongoing manufacturer and third-party training.
  • Champion and enforce a culture of safety, ensuring all shop procedures, equipment usage, and environmental regulations (e.g., fluid disposal) are strictly followed.
  • Interface with manufacturer technical assistance hotlines or field engineers to collaboratively diagnose unique or systemic product issues.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and safeguard high-value shop equipment and specialized diagnostic tools, reporting any needs for repair or replacement.
  • Assist service advisors in creating accurate and detailed repair estimates by providing precise labor time assessments and parts lists for complex jobs.
  • Perform advanced wheel alignments, suspension diagnostics, and ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) calibrations requiring a high degree of precision.
  • Diagnose and repair intricate HVAC systems, holding relevant certifications (e.g., EPA 609) and understanding complex climate control logic.
  • Utilize oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other advanced electrical diagnostic tools to trace and resolve intermittent electrical faults, shorts, and CAN bus communication errors.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management regarding technician skill gaps, training needs, and potential improvements to shop workflow and efficiency.
  • Lead by example in maintaining a clean, organized, and professional work area, setting the standard for the entire service team.
  • Participate in the evaluation and testing of new tools, software, and equipment to determine their value and effectiveness for the service department.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Parts Department with identifying and sourcing hard-to-find components for complex or vintage equipment repairs.
  • Provide expert feedback to the Service Manager on tool and equipment acquisition proposals to ensure the shop stays technologically current.
  • Contribute to developing standardized operating procedures (SOPs) for common complex repairs to improve shop-wide efficiency and consistency.
  • Participate in team meetings to share insights from recent challenging repairs, disseminating knowledge across the technical staff.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Diagnostic Software Proficiency: Expert-level ability to operate and interpret data from OEM-specific diagnostic tools (e.g., GDS2, IDS, wiTECH, ISTA) and aftermarket scanners.
  • Complex Electrical System Diagnosis: Mastery of diagnosing CAN bus networks, LIN bus, and other vehicle communication systems, including the use of oscilloscopes and breakout boxes.
  • Engine & Drivetrain Overhaul: Proven ability to perform complete teardowns and rebuilds of gasoline, diesel, and/or hybrid/EV powertrain components.
  • HVAC System Expertise: Deep knowledge of complex automatic climate control systems, including diagnosis and repair. EPA 608/609 certification is typically required.
  • ADAS Calibration: Skill in performing static and dynamic calibrations for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance.
  • Hydraulic System Troubleshooting: Ability to read hydraulic schematics and diagnose complex issues in industrial, construction, or agricultural equipment.
  • Welding and Light Fabrication: Competency in MIG/TIG welding for exhaust or structural repairs as permitted by the manufacturer.
  • ECU/Module Programming & Flashing: Experience in programming, flashing, and configuring electronic control units and other vehicle modules.
  • Precision Measuring: Proficient use of micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other precision measuring tools for internal component inspection.
  • Technical Documentation Interpretation: Ability to read, understand, and apply information from complex wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins, and repair manuals.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certificate from a post-secondary automotive, diesel, or equipment technical/vocational program.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, or a related technical field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 7-10+ years of progressive, hands-on experience as a professional service technician in a dealership or independent repair facility.

Preferred: Possession of a complete set of relevant ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications, culminating in Master Technician status (e.g., Master Automobile Technician T1-T8, or Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician). Verifiable manufacturer-specific Master Technician certification is also highly desirable.
