Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design and create photorealistic, digitally painted environments, backgrounds, and specific visual elements that flawlessly align with the established art direction and integrate with live-action footage.
- Develop and execute complex 2.5D and 3D projection setups, which includes setting up cameras, building appropriate geometry for projection, texturing, and rendering final elements.
- Seamlessly integrate completed matte paintings into live-action plates, meticulously ensuring correct lighting interaction, accurate perspective, and consistent color grading.
- Conceptualize, design, and build complete digital environments, expansive set extensions, and realistic sky domes, either from a blank slate or based on provided concept art and storyboards.
- Collaborate extensively with VFX Supervisors, Art Directors, and Compositing Leads to fully understand the creative intent and technical requirements for each assigned shot.
- Masterfully manipulate and combine diverse source materials, including raw footage plates, still photography, and CG elements, to create believable and intricate composite images.
- Consistently maintain an exceptionally high level of artistic quality and technical execution while rigorously adhering to demanding production schedules and deadlines.
- Proactively troubleshoot and resolve complex creative and technical challenges that arise during the creation of matte painting shots, often requiring innovative solutions.
- Apply a profound understanding of traditional art principles—including composition, color theory, atmospheric perspective, and the behavior of light—within a digital workflow.
- Generate pre-visualization paintings and concept art to assist directors and supervisors in establishing the definitive look, feel, and mood of a sequence before full production begins.
- Create, manage, and curate a personal and studio library of high-quality photographic elements, textures, and other assets for efficient use in current and future projects.
- Perform final shot finishing tasks, including precise color correction, lens distortion effects, and grain matching, to ensure the matte painting is indistinguishable from the live-action plate.
- Actively participate in dailies, rounds, and other formal review sessions, clearly articulating creative decisions and professionally incorporating feedback from supervisors and clients.
- Optimize personal workflows and rendering configurations to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of assets to downstream departments such as Lighting and Compositing.
- Assist in the research, development, and implementation of new techniques, software, and tools to continuously enhance the studio's matte painting pipeline and capabilities.
- Work closely with the modeling and texturing departments to ensure that 3D assets built for environments meet the specific needs of the matte painting department.
Secondary Functions
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior artists, offering constructive feedback on their work and sharing advanced techniques to foster skill development within the team.
- Participate in production meetings to assist with shot breakdowns and provide accurate time estimates for completing matte painting tasks.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, demonstrating mastery in digital painting, photo manipulation, and multi-layered composite creation.
- Strong, production-proven knowledge of 2.5D/3D projection techniques within a node-based compositing software, primarily Foundry Nuke.
- High-level proficiency in at least one major 3D software package (e.g., Maya, 3ds Max, Blender) for modeling, texturing, and rendering projection geometry.
- Solid experience with industry-standard rendering engines such as V-Ray, Arnold, or RenderMan, with a deep understanding of shaders, lighting, and render passes.
- Familiarity with digital sculpting software like ZBrush or Mudbox for creating detailed environmental assets and organic forms.
