EngineeringDesignManufacturingTechnology

🎯 Role Definition

The Mechanical Design Technician is a hands-on technical expert responsible for creating, modifying, and managing detailed mechanical designs and documentation. Working as a critical liaison between the engineering and manufacturing teams, this individual utilizes advanced CAD software to develop precise 3D models, 2D fabrication drawings, and comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs). This role is fundamental to ensuring design integrity, manufacturability, and the successful execution of new product development projects and ongoing support for existing products.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • CAD Drafter
  • Junior Technician
  • Associate's Degree Graduate (Mechanical/Drafting Technology)

Advancement To:

  • Senior Mechanical Design Technician
  • Mechanical Designer
  • Project Engineer
  • CAD Administrator / Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Manufacturing Technician
  • Quality Assurance (QA) Technician
  • Technical Illustrator / Writer

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop highly detailed and accurate 3D solid models and large assemblies of mechanical components and systems using primary CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or Inventor.
  • Create and meticulously revise complex 2D manufacturing drawings, ensuring they are complete, clear, and conform to internal and industry standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
  • Apply expert-level Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to drawings to precisely define manufacturing limits and guarantee proper component fit, form, and function.
  • Generate, manage, and maintain accurate multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs) for various assemblies and sub-assemblies within our ERP and PLM systems.
  • Collaborate directly with mechanical and electrical engineers to translate conceptual sketches, specifications, and verbal design requirements into functional and manufacturable 3D models.
  • Process and thoroughly document Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to update designs, drawings, and all associated documentation in a controlled and traceable manner.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analyses on critical assemblies to ensure that cumulative variations are within acceptable limits for assembly and performance requirements.
  • Manage and organize the central CAD data library, ensuring proper file version control, configuration management, and data integrity within a Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Conduct formal and informal checks, validating drawings and models created by other team members for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established company standards.
  • Design essential jigs, fixtures, and other tooling required for manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional design review meetings, providing critical feedback on Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Create detailed, easy-to-follow assembly instructions and visual work aids to support the manufacturing and production assembly teams on the floor.
  • Interface directly with external vendors and suppliers to communicate design requirements, obtain quotes, and resolve technical issues related to component fabrication and quality.
  • Support the rapid prototyping process by providing necessary design files, sourcing components, and assisting with hands-on assembly and initial fit-check testing.
  • Investigate and systematically resolve design-related issues identified during production, testing, or from field use, implementing and documenting corrective actions as needed.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and continuously update the library of standard parts and common design features to improve design efficiency and promote consistency across all product lines.
  • Assist in the evaluation, testing, and implementation of new CAD, PDM, and other engineering software tools to enhance team productivity.
  • Support the quality assurance team by providing detailed models and drawings for First Article Inspection (FAI) and other verification activities.
  • Generate photorealistic renderings and technical animations from CAD models for use in marketing materials, technical manuals, and executive presentations.
  • Conduct reverse engineering of existing components or competitor products to create new CAD models and drawings for analysis, improvement, or integration.
  • Provide essential technical support to the sales and field service teams regarding product specifications, configurations, and technical details.
  • Assist engineering staff in documenting test procedures and accurately recording results for design validation and verification reports.
