Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive in-process, first-article (FAI), and final inspections on a wide variety of machined, fabricated, and assembled mechanical parts to ensure 100% compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and 3D CAD models, with a specific focus on understanding and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) callouts.
  • Accurately utilize a full range of precision metrology and hand-inspection tools, including digital calipers, micrometers, height gages, bore gages, thread gages, indicators, and profilometers.
  • Set up, program (for some roles), and operate advanced inspection equipment such as Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), optical comparators, and vision systems to perform complex dimensional analysis.
  • Meticulously document inspection results by completing detailed reports, logs, and checklists, ensuring all data is recorded clearly and accurately for traceability and analysis.
  • Generate and manage First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) in accordance with AS9102 or other industry-specific standards, compiling all necessary documentation for customer submission.
  • Identify, document, and quarantine non-conforming products by initiating Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) or Discrepancy Reports (DRs), and work with the Material Review Board (MRB) for disposition.
  • Verify material certifications and special processing documentation (e.g., heat treating, plating, coating) against purchase orders and engineering requirements to ensure all specifications are met.
  • Conduct receiving inspections on raw materials and components from suppliers to validate quality and conformance before they enter the production stream.
  • Collaborate directly with machinists and production personnel on the shop floor to provide real-time feedback on part quality and help resolve manufacturing issues as they arise.
  • Assist quality and manufacturing engineers in root cause analysis (RCA) and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to address quality trends and prevent recurrence of defects.
  • Maintain and ensure the calibration status of all measurement and test equipment, coordinating with the calibration department or external vendors as needed.
  • Perform visual inspections to identify cosmetic defects such as surface finish irregularities, burrs, scratches, and other handling-related damage.
  • Review and approve manufacturing work orders and associated documentation upon successful completion of inspection operations, certifying that the part is ready for the next step.
  • Participate in internal and external audits (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100) by providing inspection records and demonstrating compliance with quality procedures.
  • Develop and refine inspection plans and work instructions to standardize inspection methods and improve efficiency and repeatability.
  • Validate part cleanliness and the proper application of part markings or identification as required by customer or internal specifications.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior inspectors or machine operators on basic inspection techniques and the proper use of measurement tools.
  • Monitor and analyze inspection data to identify negative trends, process variations, or recurring issues that may require engineering or process adjustments.
  • Communicate inspection status, critical findings, and quality alerts effectively to team leads, supervisors, and engineering staff in a timely and professional manner.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Reading: Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting complex mechanical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing): Deep understanding and practical application of ASME Y14.5 standards to verify complex part geometry.
  • Precision Measuring Tools: Mastery of hand-held metrology instruments like calipers, micrometers, height gages, and bore gages.
  • CMM Operation: Experience setting up and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (Zeiss Calypso, PC-DMIS, or similar software is a major plus).

  • Visual Inspection: A trained eye for identifying cosmetic defects, surface finish anomalies, and other visual imperfections.
  • Optical Comparator / Vision System: Experience using profile projectors and automated vision systems for 2D measurements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) certification is highly desirable.

Experience Requirements
