Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conducting comprehensive preventative and predictive maintenance routines on a wide array of industrial production machinery and mechanical equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system failures by systematically analyzing blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Executing timely and effective repairs on equipment, which includes dismantling, repairing, and reassembling machinery such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, and production lines.
  • Installing, aligning, and commissioning new machinery and equipment, ensuring it meets all operational and safety standards before handover to production teams.
  • Operating standard machine shop tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses to fabricate or repair parts and components with high precision.
  • Performing various welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, for the fabrication and repair of metal structures, guards, and equipment components.
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts inventory using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Inspecting and assessing the condition of machinery and equipment to identify potential issues, signs of wear and tear, and necessary adjustments or component replacements.
  • Collaborating closely with production staff, engineers, and operators to understand equipment performance issues and develop effective, long-term solutions.
  • Reading and interpreting complex technical drawings, blueprints, schematics, and service manuals to understand equipment assembly, operation, and repair procedures.
  • Ensuring all work is performed in strict compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and established Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures to maintain a safe environment.
  • Managing the lubrication program for all plant machinery, which involves selecting appropriate lubricants, maintaining schedules, and performing oil analysis.
  • Assisting in the development and continuous improvement of preventative maintenance (PM) procedures, schedules, and checklists to enhance equipment reliability.
  • Responding promptly and effectively to emergency breakdowns and equipment failures, working under pressure to restore operations as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Providing technical guidance, on-the-job training, and mentorship to apprentices and less experienced maintenance personnel.
  • Performing pipefitting tasks, including cutting, threading, and installing piping for hydraulic, pneumatic, coolant, and process fluid systems.
  • Conducting rigging and lifting operations for moving and positioning heavy equipment, machinery, and components safely and efficiently.
  • Calibrating and adjusting machinery components to ensure they meet precise performance specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.
  • Evaluating and recommending equipment upgrades, modifications, or replacements to improve reliability, efficiency, safety, and operational capabilities.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area, including the proper storage and maintenance of tools, parts, and materials in the maintenance shop.

Secondary Functions

  • Support engineering teams with data and feedback on equipment performance for root cause analysis and reliability projects.
  • Contribute to the organization's reliability and maintenance strategy by identifying recurring issues and suggesting process improvements.
  • Collaborate with the procurement department and vendors to source, specify, and order necessary spare parts, materials, and specialized tools.
  • Participate in daily team meetings, safety briefings, and planning sessions to coordinate maintenance activities with production schedules.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to interpret complex mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic diagrams to diagnose and repair systems.
  • Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: In-depth knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing circuits, pumps, valves, cylinders, and actuators.
  • Welding & Fabrication: Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and Stick welding, along with cutting, grinding, and fitting metal components.
  • Machine Shop Operations: Skill in using lathes, mills, drill presses, and grinders to create or modify parts to precise specifications.
  • Power Transmission Systems: Expertise in the installation, alignment, and maintenance of bearings, gears, belts, chains, and couplings.
  • Preventative & Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM): Experience with PM strategies and technologies like vibration analysis, thermal imaging, and oil analysis.
  • Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS): Competency in using software to log work orders, track parts, and document maintenance history.
  • Rigging & Lifting: Certified or highly experienced in safely moving heavy machinery using cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment.
  • Industrial Electrical Troubleshooting: Basic ability to diagnose issues with motors, sensors, switches, and 3-phase power systems (up to 480v).
  • Alignment Techniques: Proficiency in precision alignment of shafts, motors, and couplings using dial indicators or laser alignment tools.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a Certificate from a Technical/Vocational school.
  • Completion of a state-certified Journeyman program or a formal apprenticeship.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10+ years of hands-on maintenance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy equipment environment.

Preferred:

  • Documented experience as a Journeyman-level tradesman.
  • Specific experience with the types of equipment used in the target industry (e.g., CNC machines, high-speed packaging lines, food processing equipment, stamping presses).
  • Certifications in welding, rigging, or predictive maintenance technologies.
