Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex troubleshooting, diagnostics, and corrective repairs on a wide array of medical devices, including infusion pumps, patient monitors, ventilators, defibrillators, and electrosurgical units.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance (PM), performance assurance inspections, and electrical safety testing on medical equipment to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Install, configure, and calibrate new medical equipment, ensuring it is properly integrated into the clinical environment and ready for patient use.
  • Document all service events, maintenance activities, and repairs meticulously in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Respond promptly to service calls and emergency repair requests from clinical departments to minimize equipment downtime and disruption to patient care.
  • Evaluate and diagnose equipment issues by interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical service manuals.
  • Manage the lifecycle of medical equipment, from initial incoming inspection and asset tagging to performance verification and eventual decommissioning.
  • Prioritize and schedule service and repair workload to meet the critical needs of various clinical areas, including intensive care units, operating rooms, and emergency departments.
  • Perform modifications, upgrades, and authorized software updates on medical devices as directed by manufacturers and in compliance with safety bulletins.
  • Utilize specialized electronic test equipment, such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, patient simulators, and pressure/flow analyzers, to perform accurate diagnostics and calibrations.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical staff to understand reported equipment malfunctions and provide clear status updates on repair progress.
  • Ensure all work is performed in adherence to local, state, federal, and TJC/DNV regulations, as well as hospital-specific safety protocols.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support for urgent medical equipment failures.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in evaluating new and emerging medical technologies to provide technical insights and recommendations for equipment acquisition.
  • Provide basic operational training and technical in-servicing to clinical staff on the proper use, care, and handling of medical equipment.
  • Maintain and manage an organized inventory of spare parts, accessories, and supplies needed for equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Engineering team to identify trends in equipment failure and develop strategies to improve device reliability and reduce costs.
  • Participate in incident investigations related to medical device failures, providing technical analysis and detailed reports to support patient safety and risk management initiatives.
  • Review and provide feedback on technical documentation and service procedures from equipment manufacturers.
  • Support projects related to medical device integration and networking, working alongside IT and clinical informatics teams.
  • Escort and oversee third-party vendor service activities to ensure work is completed to hospital standards and properly documented.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep understanding of electronic principles, schematics, and circuitry for effective troubleshooting and repair.
  • Proficiency in using a wide range of electronic test equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, safety analyzers, and function generators.
  • Hands-on experience repairing, calibrating, and maintaining a diverse portfolio of medical equipment (e.g., life support, diagnostic, therapeutic).
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and standards, including FDA, TJC (The Joint Commission), DNV, CAP, and NFPA 99.
  • Competency in using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for work order management and asset tracking.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to navigate device-specific service software.
  • Familiarity with basic networking principles as they apply to modern, connected medical devices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology (BMET), Electronics Technology, or a related field.
  • Equivalent military training (e.g., DoD BMET program).

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biomedical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Certification such as Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of hands-on experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician in a hospital or clinical setting.

  • Experience working within a multi-facility healthcare system.
