Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform a full range of complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological analyses on patient specimens including blood, tissue, and body fluids.
Accurately and efficiently operate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and automated analyzers for disciplines such as clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and immunology.
Conduct routine and preventative maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting on all assigned laboratory equipment to ensure consistent and reliable performance.
Meticulously evaluate the validity of test results by applying extensive knowledge of quality control principles, instrument function, and physiological conditions.
Identify and investigate abnormal patient results, instrument flags, and quality control discrepancies, taking appropriate corrective action before releasing any information.
Prepare various reagents, standards, and control materials according to established laboratory protocols to support daily testing activities.
Perform manual testing procedures, such as manual cell differentials, body fluid counts, and microscopic examinations, requiring a high degree of skill and judgment.
Ensure proper collection, receipt, accessioning, and processing of patient specimens, verifying patient identification and sample integrity at every step.
Enter and verify patient demographic information and test results within the Laboratory Information System (LIS) with exceptional accuracy.
Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, including the handling of biohazardous materials, chemical safety, and infection control procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
Communicate critical or STAT test results directly to physicians, nurses, or other appropriate clinical staff in a clear and timely manner.
Participate in and document proficiency testing surveys to maintain the laboratory's compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies like CAP, CLIA, and The Joint Commission.
Maintain detailed and organized records of test results, quality control data, instrument maintenance, and patient information in accordance with all regulatory guidelines.
Assist in maintaining adequate levels of laboratory supplies and reagents by monitoring inventory and communicating ordering needs to senior staff or supervisors.
Evaluate new testing methods and instrumentation under supervision, providing feedback on performance, feasibility, and workflow integration.
Analyze and interpret complex data sets from quality control logs and patient results to identify trends, shifts, or potential issues with testing systems.
Provide technical guidance and support to other laboratory staff, including phlebotomists and lab assistants, regarding specimen requirements and processing.
Perform serological and immunological tests to detect the presence of antibodies and antigens, contributing to the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
Prepare slides for microscopic analysis, including staining and cover-slipping, ensuring optimal quality for review by pathologists or senior technologists.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree from a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program.
National certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by a recognized agency such as ASCP or AMT is required.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or a related science field.
