Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections from diverse patient populations, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, while ensuring a compassionate and reassuring patient experience.
- Uphold stringent patient identification protocols by verifying patient information with at least two identifiers before any procedure to prevent pre-analytical errors.
- Accurately and legibly label all collected specimens at the patient's side with required information, including patient name, date of birth, and collection time/date, to ensure traceability.
- Receive, sort, and triage a high volume of various biological specimens (blood, urine, tissue, etc.) arriving in the laboratory from different collection points.
- Operate laboratory centrifuges to spin down blood tubes, carefully separating serum or plasma, and prepare aliquots for testing in different departments.
- Accession patient and specimen information with exceptional accuracy into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), generating labels and ensuring all data matches the physical sample and requisition form.
- Prepare specimens for both in-house analysis and shipment to reference laboratories, ensuring proper packaging, temperature control, and adherence to all transportation regulations (IATA, DOT).
- Monitor and manage pending test logs and troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, such as missing samples, incorrect tube types, or incomplete orders, by communicating with clinical staff.
- Perform and document daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and quality control checks on laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, refrigerators, and freezers.
- Maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized workspace by disinfecting benches, cleaning up spills, and following established safety procedures to prevent contamination.
- Manage laboratory supply inventory by monitoring stock levels, restocking workstations, receiving new orders, and notifying a supervisor of shortages to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
- Adhere strictly to all safety and infection control policies, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and proper disposal of biohazardous waste and sharps.
Secondary Functions
- Answer and direct incoming calls to the laboratory, professionally handling inquiries from physicians, nurses, and patients regarding specimen requirements and test results.
- Distribute laboratory reports and other correspondence to appropriate clinical areas, ensuring confidentiality and timely delivery of critical information.
- Assist Medical Technologists with non-technical tasks such as preparing reagents, loading and unloading specimens from automated analyzers, and performing basic instrument maintenance.
- Participate in the laboratory's quality improvement initiatives by collecting data, identifying opportunities for process enhancement, and contributing to team projects.
- Train and mentor new employees or students in phlebotomy techniques, specimen processing, and laboratory safety protocols under the guidance of a senior team member.
- Maintain temperature logs for all temperature-dependent equipment (refrigerators, freezers, incubators) and report any out-of-range readings immediately.
- File and maintain laboratory records, including requisition forms, quality control logs, and maintenance records, ensuring they are organized and easily retrievable for audits.
- Support clinical staff by providing appropriate collection containers and instructions to ensure proper specimen collection at the source.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as nursing and patient registration, to resolve issues related to patient identification, test ordering, and specimen integrity.
