🎯 Role Definition

The Metal Grinder is a vital member of our production floor, responsible for transforming raw or rough metal parts into finished products with smooth, specified surfaces. This position requires the skilled operation of various grinding tools to remove excess material, burrs, and weld seams from fabricated components. Success in this role hinges on a strong commitment to safety, an unwavering attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical drawings to produce work that meets precise quality and engineering standards. You will work collaboratively with welders, fabricators, and quality inspectors to ensure a seamless production workflow.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • General Laborer
  • Machine Operator Trainee
  • Trade School Graduate (Welding/Fabrication)

Advancement To:

  • Lead Grinder / Finishing Team Lead
  • Quality Control Inspector
  • Fabrication Supervisor

Lateral Moves:

  • Welder / Welder's Helper
  • Metal Fabricator

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a variety of handheld power tools, including angle grinders, die grinders, and belt sanders, to smooth metal surfaces and remove imperfections.
  • Meticulously grind and blend weld seams on fabricated assemblies to create a seamless and aesthetically pleasing finish according to project specifications.
  • Systematically deburr, buff, and polish stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum parts to achieve the required surface texture and smoothness.
  • Review and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to understand the specific grinding and finishing requirements for each component.
  • Utilize pedestal grinders and stationary sanding equipment for shaping and finishing parts that are not suitable for handheld tools.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Identify and mark defects such as cracks, pits, and dimension errors for rework or reporting to the quality assurance department.
  • Select and properly install appropriate grinding wheels, sanding discs, and abrasive belts on equipment based on the material type and desired finish.
  • Set up and secure workpieces, parts, and assemblies using clamps, fixtures, and jigs to ensure stability and safety during the grinding process.
  • Rigorously follow all company safety protocols and procedures, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like face shields, safety glasses, and respirators.
  • Monitor machine operations to detect any malfunctions or unusual noises, and perform routine preventative maintenance checks on grinding equipment.
  • Execute finishing tasks to achieve specific surface requirements, such as a #4 brushed or a mirror polish finish on stainless steel.
  • Safely handle and move large and heavy metal components using overhead cranes, hoists, and pallet jacks as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by regularly cleaning equipment and clearing floors of debris and hazards.
  • Accurately document completed work, track production hours, and complete required quality control paperwork for traceability.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist fabrication and welding teams with material handling, parts preparation, and basic fitting tasks as needed to support production flow.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, and efficiency in the finishing process.
  • Collaborate with team leads and supervisors to prioritize workload and ensure production schedules and deadlines are consistently met.
  • Manage and maintain an adequate inventory of grinding consumables, such as discs, wheels, and belts, and report shortages to the supervisor.
  • Support training of new or less experienced team members on proper grinding techniques, safety practices, and quality standards.
