- Meticulously read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and engineering specifications to fully understand the required surface finish, dimensions, and quality standards.
- Select the appropriate abrasives, buffing wheels, polishing compounds, and tools based on the type of metal (e.g., stainless steel, aluminum, titanium) and the desired finish.
- Systematically remove surface defects such as scratches, pits, excess weld material, and burrs from metal parts to prepare them for final polishing.
- Perform detailed hand-polishing and lapping on intricate, complex, or delicate components that require a high degree of manual dexterity and control.
- Conduct in-process and final visual inspections to identify any imperfections and ensure a uniform, high-quality finish across the entire workpiece.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, and profilometers, to verify that parts conform to dimensional tolerances post-polishing.
- Expertly blend and feather reworked or repaired areas to seamlessly match the surrounding surface finish, making corrections virtually undetectable.
- Set up, adjust, and perform routine maintenance on polishing and grinding machinery to ensure optimal performance, safety, and longevity.
- Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety protocols, including the consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety glasses, and protective gloves.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by following 5S principles and participating in regular shop housekeeping duties.
- Document all work performed, including completing production logs, quality control sheets, and tracking time spent on each job order accurately.
- Collaborate effectively with machinists, welders, and quality assurance personnel to troubleshoot finishing issues and ensure a smooth, efficient production workflow.
- Carefully handle and transport high-value, delicate, or heavy components using appropriate methods and equipment to prevent damage or injury.
- Monitor the inventory of polishing supplies and consumables, such as abrasive belts, discs, and compounds, and proactively report replenishment needs to the supervisor.
- Prepare and clean finished parts, ensuring they are free of debris and polishing residue before they move to the next stage of production or packaging.
- Apply different finishing techniques, which may include tumbling, sandblasting, or vibratory finishing, to achieve specific textures and appearances.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and suggesting process enhancements that can increase efficiency, improve quality, or enhance safety.
- Train and mentor junior polishers or apprentices, sharing knowledge of best practices, proper techniques, and critical safety standards.
- Work independently with minimal supervision to meet demanding production schedules and deadlines while consistently maintaining high-quality output.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in other production areas or departments as needed to support team goals and meet fluctuating manufacturing demands.
- Participate in routine equipment cleaning and preventive maintenance tasks to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
- Contribute to team meetings and quality discussions, providing valuable feedback from a finishing perspective.
- Help maintain the overall cleanliness and organization of the shop floor beyond the immediate workstation.
