Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and analyze complex engineering drawings, blueprints, 3D models, sketches, and work orders to determine project requirements, material specifications, and the precise sequence of fabrication operations.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate a wide range of fabrication machinery, including CNC press brakes, hydraulic shears, laser cutters, plasma cutters, and turret punches, to accurately cut and form sheet metal.
  • Execute precise bending and forming operations, calculating bend allowances and deductions, and selecting the correct tooling and dies to achieve specified angles and radii without compromising material integrity.
  • Perform various welding processes, primarily TIG and MIG, to join and assemble metal components, ensuring welds are strong, clean, and meet both structural and aesthetic standards.
  • Skillfully use hand and power tools such as grinders, sanders, buffers, and drills to deburr, finish, and prepare fabricated parts for subsequent processes like painting, powder coating, or plating.
  • Conduct rigorous in-process and final quality inspections using precision measuring instruments including digital calipers, micrometers, protractors, and height gauges to verify parts conform to dimensional tolerances.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference points on sheet metal stock according to blueprints or templates, ensuring optimal material usage and minimal waste.
  • Assemble complex metal structures and components by fitting, aligning, and securing parts using welding, bolting, and riveting techniques.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve fabrication issues as they arise, adjusting machine settings, modifying techniques, or consulting with engineering to address design or material challenges.
  • Manage workflow and prioritize tasks effectively to meet tight production schedules and deadlines without sacrificing quality or safety.
  • Read and understand job travelers and production orders to ensure all required materials, processes, and specifications are correctly followed for each unique job.
  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely to handle and transport large sheets of metal and heavy fabricated assemblies within the facility.
  • Select appropriate gauges and types of sheet metal (e.g., stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel) based on project specifications and technical requirements.
  • Perform routine checks and preventative maintenance on fabrication equipment to ensure operational readiness, safety, and longevity, reporting any malfunctions for repair.
  • Program or input parameters into CNC-controlled machinery, making necessary adjustments to offsets and settings to maintain accuracy throughout a production run.
  • Fabricate custom components and one-off prototypes for research and development projects, working closely with engineers to refine designs.
  • Ensure all finished products are properly identified, stacked, and protected to prevent damage during handling and transportation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by adhering to 5S principles and all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Document production activities, including materials used, time spent, and parts completed, accurately in the company's ERP or production tracking system.
  • Collaborate with other team members, including welders, machinists, and assemblers, to ensure a smooth and efficient production flow from start to finish.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint and Technical Drawing Interpretation: Advanced ability to read and comprehend complex 2D and 3D engineering drawings, including weld symbols, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Press Brake Operation: Expertise in setting up and operating CNC and manual press brakes, including tool selection (dies and punches) and bend sequence programming.
  • Welding Proficiency: Skilled in TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding on various metals like stainless steel, aluminum, and mild steel, with the ability to produce clean, strong, and visually appealing welds.
  • Metal Cutting Operations: Proficient in operating laser cutters, plasma cutters, and shears to cut sheet metal to precise dimensions.
